Upgrading processor from 1.6 GHz t2330 to 2.4 GHz t8300

Hi, I was looking for assistance on all of the steps needed to upgrade my processor from a 1.6 GHz dual-core t2330 to a 2.4 GHz T8300 core 2 duo.  I have an inspiron 1420 laptop and I'm a bit confused on the steps I need to take to upgrade.  It is my understanding that I need to know the manufacturer and model of my motherboard.  I'm not even sure how to find out this information.  Can someone assist me in getting started with this process.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

All that is needed is the CPU change - no other modifications are required.  Be sure you clean off the heatsink and apply a thin layer of thermal compound to the top of the new CPU before you re- install the heatsink.

Thanks for your response.  I'm totally ignorant in regards to technical aspects of computer hardware.  Can you elaborate on what the heatsink and thermal compound are?

The heatsink is a metal part that fits atop the CPU and allows heat transfer from the CPU to the air.  You should apply a small amount of compound to the top of the new CPU to enhance the thermal transfer.

If you've not done this before you may want to have a shop do it for you - it's relatively easy to damage the internal components of a notebook and very expensive to replace those parts if they are damaged.
