Using a SSD as a primary drive and mSata with HDD as the secondary drive? Dell 7720
Hello everyone,
I have the Dell 17R SE 7720 laptop which came with a 1TB HDD, and I swapped it with my Samsung 830 SSD 256Gb as my primary hard drive and placed the 1TB HDD as my secondary drive.
On the SSD I have Windows 8 installed, as well as a few games and programs that I use regularly. On the HDD I've placed my documents, pictures, music etc. as well as a few games which I don't play regularly.
I was wondering if its possible to purchase an mSata drive (~64Gb) and use the Intel SRT to link it to the secondary 1TB HDD, and if so is it worth it or overkill?
Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hi James,
Intel Smart Response Technology (SRT) is a proprietary caching mechanism which allows a SATA solid-state drive (SSD) to function as cache for a (conventional, magnetic) hard disk drive. It is available only when the (integrated) disk controller is configured in RAID mode (but not AHCI or IDE modes) by implementing a style of RAID-0 striping.
The configuration that you are trying will not lead to better results as mSATA is used to accelerate a conventional hard drive for a faster boot. As in your case the OS is already installed on the SSD, accelerating the conventional hard drive will not make any difference.

Good Day,
I have the same system on order. I was wondering if it is possible to change the 32G mSATA device for a larger one, then load Windows 7 on it for boot. This would make the 1TB the secondary for apps and data files etc.
As a follow-on... Assuming I can put a 64G mSATA and set it up as my boot drive. I would make the 1TB the drive for apps and data (as previously stated). However, I would add another SATA drive in the 2nd HD space. With this configuration, I would boot to the 64G mSATA. I would access my apps/data on the 1TB drive. The 2nd SATA drive would be my backup drive. I would use a backup utility to create disk images and store them there.
My favorite option is to use 64G mSATA for my boot drive or install a large SSD drive for boot and apps/data. Then use the existing 1TB for the backup images (possible buy a smaller one and use the 1TB in my NAS device).
What do you think?

Hi Tony,
Yes, you can install a bigger mSATA hard drive on this system and load Windows on it. Theoretically speaking all the configurations shared by you are possible, however, Dell has not test it with these configurations.
