Vostro 1000 wireless driver not working on clean install

Bought new Vostro 1000. Took out of box and installed Win Vista Ult (from a retail disc in the box, not the Dell recovery disc)

This is an Athlonx2 with I think a 1390 wireless or something like that. It is the model Dell was selling for $419 in early March. 

Everything went pretty smoothly. However I cannot at all get the wifi to function. When I click "diagnose why win. can't find networks" I get "install wireless equipment and the driver".

I've installed various versions of the wireless driver off the CD-rom which installs, but to no effect. When I click the wireless utility I get a box saying "functionality is limited as the device is not found" or something like that.

Under Device Manager I have a "Network Adapter" with no driver, trying to "search" for the driver both on Windows Update and in the "driver" directory from the self-extracting file from the driver disc results in no drivers found.

I can surf internet through the ethernet port but nothing on wifi. Wifi light on the machine doesn't light up. It did light up the first time I powered it before I put in Windows.

What is going on with this thing?
