Vostro 1510 keyboard last row shifted

Dear Community,

recently, I had the main board of my Vostro 1510 replaced by Dell due to the buggy nVidia chip. Now I am facing problems with the last row of my keyboard. All keys are shifted one to the left.

Any suggestions on this?

Hi pinsleepe,

Please reply with this information

  • Which keys are displaying wrong characters?
  • Do you hear any beeping sound before the system boots to windows?

You can try to type using the on-screen keyboard and check if wrong characters are displayed. Go to Start>> type 'Onscreen keyboard' in Start Search box.

Sometimes, a static charge accumulates due to which the keys do not respond. To drain the flea power, disconnect the AC adapter, battery. Please also remove any external devices connected to the computer. Once done, press and hold the power button for 20 seconds. Reconnect the battery and the AC adapter.

You may also try to disconnect the keyboard and reconnect it. Disconnect the AC adapter, battery and external devices prior to this step. Please refer to this link: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/vos1510/en/SM/html/keyboard.htm#wp1179980

You can run the hardware diagnostics. Please follow these steps:

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. As the computer boots, press when the Dell Splash Screen appears.
  3. When the 'One time Boot menu' appears, highlight 'Diagnostics' using the up/down arrow keys and press Enter.
  4. PSA diagnostics will proceed. Press Y on 'Were color bars displayed'. When the test finishes, press N on 'Do you want to run the remaining memory tests'
  5. Press enter on 'Booting Dell Diagnostics'.
  6. Press 'Tab' key, select 'Test System' and press Enter.
  7. Click on 'Custom Test'.
  8. Select 'Keyboard' and run the interactive test.

You can check the computer in Safe Mode. Restart PC>> press F8 2-3 times when the Dell Splash screen appears. The Advanced Boot options menu will appear. Select 'Safe Mode with Networking'. Check the last row of the keyboard in notepad.

Hope this helps.

Do write back with the findings

Hi Manpret C,

finally, I managed to solve problem. It was the (well known) keyboard layout problem with this series which could be solved by the ominous WinKBSel1004.exe. All keys of the last row were shifted by one. On my qwertz-layout this means: y didn't work at all, x=y,c=x ... <=- and <>| totally missing.

The keyboard was set to us style (0x4b), while I needed uk (0x45?).

The bitter pill of solving the problem was that i had to use windows which never started on this machine before (4 years now). The support I connected didn't reply for the last two weeks and I felt left alone.

Thank you for your reply, maybe this will help other users in the future. But be asured that I will think more than twice in the future before buying another Dell system.
