What should happen if I start my computer without the CPU?

Thanks! THis is what happens. I think my CPU is bad.
Do you know if I can use any SL3 CPU, or must it be an SL53S?

your computer will not do anything.  your keyboard lights will flash indicating a cpu failure.

Typically the CPU won't fail unless exposed to ESD through improper handling or driven at an incorrect voltage by overclocking for example.

I think the system has been overheating. The last time, I heard a pop
and noticed that the plastic cap on the cpu popped off. It looks charred
under the cap. I think it's fried.

I'm wondering if I can replace it with any SL53 CPU, or does it need to be
an SL53S (the 1Ghz) version.

After reading some threads on this BBS I'm even more suspect, because it sounds
like the PIII SL53S tends to run hot-- mine did.
