Why does the Studio 1535 have an eSata port if it doesn't work?
I chatted online with a Dell representative and asked her why my eSata port didn't work. She said it's because the Studio 1535 doesn't have eSata. Does this make any sense? The port is there, and the eSata cable I have with my external hard drive fits perfectly. When I bought the laptop, it was sold as Studio 15, and there was no way for me to pick a later version of the laptop like 1536 and up, which supposedly have eSata capabilities. Even the specs for the Studio 1535 say that it has a combination USB/eSata port. It works as a USB, but not as an eSata.
Is this "false advertising" on Dell's part? Is there any kind of software driver that can enable my eSata port? If not, why is the port there?

It has been confirmed that the eSATA ports on Studio 1535/1735 are non-functional...
Studio 1537/1737 eSATA has been confirmed working...

Hello,
Page 317 of this Dell PDF file for your system clearly lists an eSATA port.
The tech that you spoke with must be mistaken. I would call again. :emotion-55:

I really don't think that link confirms anything at all. Not any more than a bunch of users here saying that it is a eSATA port will 'confirm' it. :emotion-15:

BTW: I actually have tested the Studio 1535 and verified the non-functioning eSATA myself...
None of the users have reported the Studio 1535 eSATA port to be working in the 7 pages of that thread...good enough for me to call confirmed!:emotion-21:

Just to add that I recently received my STUDIO 1558. The USB port works but not the eSATA. Then I found this forum. What a bummer!

After going through BIOS and controller updates, to a new mother board, to a replacement unit, to new cables, to adding a SATA express Card, my issue was not the DELL unit.
My enclosure was an ACOMDATA TANGO USB/eSATA 2.5 Inch drive (no need for a power supply). It works fine on the USB port but had issues with the eSATA. This was my first time using eSATA so I thought that just like USB, you get power from the eSATA port/cable...WRONG!!!! Unfortunately, the technician that was sent to replace the motherboard didn't know either. Ohhh well.
In my case, I had to plug both the USB and eSATA cable to make it work. The enclosure gets power from the USB cable and the data transfer is through the eSATA cable. It was PNP. Case closed (for me at least).
I should have RTFM!
