Windows 10 - Dell Inspiron N7110

From what it sounds like, any of the Nx110 systems are not designed to run Windows 10 and will not be able to. However there is not confirmation at the time, but it is more than likely it will never support 10 because it was not designed to run 8 or 8.1 either.

I am having a dell inspiron n7110 laptop purchased in 2012 with windows 7 pre installed. During the release of Windows 8, the upgrade assistant showed my laptop is compatible and was running windows 8 since then.Yesterday I have upgraded to Windows 10 as the upgrade assistant again showed the same message. If Inspiron N7110 can't run windows 10 what features of windows 10 doesn't work?

My N7110 never ever showed the upgrade assistant.

Windows 10 works but the DVD drive is not recognized.  Other than that it works fine.  Graphics ect....

I only noticed that my DVD drive don't work.  No other issues.  At least not yet. Robert

I upgraded my laptop N7110 and it works with Windows 10 with everything working but the DVD drive.  I have been tinkering with the Windows 10 for over a couple weeks now and just now found out the drive don't work.  So yes I would suggest you keep Windows 7 on it.  It will still be around for quite a few years because people don't like change.  So just enjoy Windows 7.  I plan to reinstall it on mine. I upgraded from Win7 to Win10, and everything seemed ok for about 20 minutes. Then the entire display went bad, and I couldn't recognize any icons or navigate anywhere. I rebooted a few times to see if it made any difference, but in the end, I restored to Win7.

I looked for a video driver update, thinking that might be the cause, but did not find anything that seemed applicable.

Guess I will run Win7 till they pull support.

I have not had any issues with the DVD drive on any of my three N7110 laptops after Win 10 upgrade, but have had the problem with the video intermittently distorting.  Surely Dell will come out with an updated video driver soon to support its faithful customers.  I tried updating the BIOS with no successful results to correct the video issue. 

Oh the commercial world of windows is now doom and gloom going into cell phones.

2007 My Inspiron 1300 Windows XP in mint condition can’t go beyond nor the HP and Cannon Printer and Scanner.

2011 My XPS 8300 Windows 7 ultimate (a jinxed machine 13 months 1 memory (4G) went dead then the ATI I did not want lost HDMI connection. Just today I pulled the head off and threw away the Fox card reader which was causing black screens and hard drive unknown with pop up SHWICON.

Now it’s revving once more for 3D model making.

We got to think outside Bill’s box after several decades religious dependence. Try any of the 10 best Linux products (google: Best Linux Based OS ). Even Dell installs Ubuntu.

I can have the best boiler (1200) for 35 years without replacement but a £2000  XPS and in 4 years it needs replacement because Bill went to town.

Money: They do the surreal thing all the time- fedup.

Update. Upgrade assistant appeared and declared N7110 ok for upgrade.

Upgrade to Windows 10 done. Several restarts by Windows 10 to put in new drivers including screen to  cure instability. All fully working after 24 hours.

Microsoft seem to have done their homework and put in part manufacturers drivers where Dell have not upgraded theirs.

i always thought Dell was a assemble and sell outfit. Later to all manufactured and assembled at China in collaboration 50/50 like Range Rover/Jaguar at Chere Auto China.

Hardware Manufactures have to pay Microsoft to have their driver capable of driving in windows 10 environment; so they stuck a deal because Win 10 is really Win 8.3 so it is free.

The problem tech and non tech buyers face is the middle man `sales manager` of dell when we request for an amended version of the set product advertised. Their behaviour is that of a classic bankster who shuts us off as soon as they got  credit card details. They are bookworms have never manufactured even in their dreams and makes one feel that the world is ruled by logic when it never was and hit us there by changing our specs. While the Chinese are slaves of specifications and believe the world is ruled by passion which is true. I believe ants are the real rationalist not humans and that is where it is manufactured - ant industry city.

Did you first upgrade to 8, and then to 10? I did not see the upgrade assistant on my Win7, so went to Dell and got the Win10 update there. Perhaps moving first to 8 is a requirement, or do you think that upgrading to 10 installs all the requirements and updated drivers from 8? 

Based on your success, I might give it another shot.

I upgraded straight from Windows 7.  There was a lot of downloading of drivers etc. The only thing not working so far is the HDMI output as the card supplied by Dell is aged and was superseded before the computer was built and is not due for an upgrade by the manufacturer.

I am not prepared to dismantle the machine for a new card.

Cortana needs a 3rd party Virtual Audio Cable program and UK speech, location etc. quite fiddly to get the speech drivers etc correct as the install downloads USA ones.

The big advantage is a much faster startup.

Its good to have a asus card with hdmi.with screen controlled onboard bang & olf speakers- it works smart over dell hardware and drivers are available in plenty for almost all (taiwan product not china)

now we have both learnt a lesson from dell. never ask for amendment from the set model. `the sales manager would fox tech and none tech get your cc number to supply a quote and you fall deep in the fox trap.

I asked for 2 cards in lieu of on board. The ATI graphic name itself is hoodoo and they passed it over my head. The HDMI failed in 12 months but the dvi was working and my xtreme creative sound was working too.

I think the culprit for all these is the multi media driver called Fox. do a registry removal of drivers or hardware not in use at all.

1. Hit  Windows Key + R simultaneously.

2. Type   MSConfig in the box then click  OK.

3. Select   Startup tab.

4. Find SHWICONXP9106 (if its there) & untick the box against it. Hit   OK.

5. Reboot & see what happens.

If it leads nowhere replace the card - do not fear but remember to note in drawing how you do it. OR see the user manual for your model in the dell directory or download it- there in a pdf they give you the sequence of removal and assembly. Plus they give you a sequence of installation of drivers after operating system- check the contents its very easy or these drivers with Win patches can get knotted when not used. By the way have you saved the drivers you downloaded? chk downloads folder and keep them in usb for posterity if they are the latest.
