XPS 12 Chipset drivers not updated for Windows 8.1

Couldn't pass up the $699 deal for Haswel I5, 4GB and 128SSD from the Microsoft Store! Time will tell....

I played with Windows 8.0 for a while and had that terrible tracpad jumping. After some time I decided to go for the 8.1 upgrade (just noticed that the Dell site says they come with 8.1). Had read horror stories about screen rotation issues and the track pad. I made three lists of all drivers:

1) Dell website 8.0 drivers
2) What I had on my machine
3) Dell website 8.1 drivers list

After the 8.1 windows update, I rechecked the drivers on my machine. Many were automatically updated, and in some cases to versions more recent than the Dell 8.1 specified drivers. So I did not run any of Dell's 8.1 packages for those items (I think the graphics and 7260 wifi were included).

My first concern was getting the Dell 8.1 chipset drivers installed.... all of my chipset components in device manager still showed versions from 8.0. The 8.1 driver update utility for the chipset ran through its motions and then instantaneously said "finished." It didn't do anything. Nothing changed in Device manager. Dell tech took control of my machine and did the same thing. No changes to chipset:

Intel(R) 8 Series LPC Controller (Premium SKU -9C43
Intel(R) 8 Series PCI Express Root Port #1 - 9C10
Intel(R) 8 Series PCI Express Root Port #3 -9C14
Intel(R) 8 Series SMBus Controller -9C22

...all the above items are ver 9.4.0.1017

Intel(R) 8 Series USB Enhanced Host Controller #1 9C26 (under USB controllers section)

shows ver 6.3.9600.16384 6/21/2006. Note, on this device, I had right clicked to uninstall, it before attempting the Dell driver install for 8.1 because I had read a review of another who said he uninstalled drivers before, running the update). Should it be the same as the above 8 series drivers?

Well everything seems to be working fine after running the remaining Dell 8.1 utilities. Everything sleeps, wakesup, rotates and scrolls perfectly. The Dell tech said he got a duplicate 9q33 machine and ended up with the same driver versions, so I was good to go.

But something doesn't sit right with me. If Dell says I should have ver x and I have version y, then something is amiss... right?

I read elsewhere that someone ran chipset updates from intel. Their driver update utility does not recognize my chipset?

So should I stick with what I've got, or force an update from intel somehow?

Thanks.

Sounds like the driver installed only and did not extract, try running this from Intel directly:

Thanks.  I've been thinking about trying that.  It sounds like this utility will identify the Intel components on my system and then write the appropriate inf files in the registry.  After that, the system will automatically reconfigure/update appropriately?

If my thinking is correct above, does that mean that Dell's initial setup on this PC used different values for inf files than what a standard Intel machine would use?  I've read that some OEMS might do just that if they prefer their system to use modified versions of the drivers.  Is that the case here or did Dell just make a mistake?

In other words, is there some reason that Dell does not want us to use the latest chip set drivers?

Thanks again.  Learning experience for me.

Getting somewhere.  The inf update utility specified above went through the process of unpacking.  After accepting the agreement, it also finished almost instantaneously.  I rebooted and then checked the drivers for the above devices and nothing changed.  But now when running auto detect utility ( Run this easy to use  Intel® Driver Update Utility  and it will "automatically" tell you if you need to update your chipset INF file, and if so, will prompt you to install and you are done. This will save you a lot of time not only on your chipset download but the most common files needed for your system.) It does recognize that chipset is there (before it said it was unrecognized:

I'm not too concerned about the audio or Wired networking errors because I have Realtec for audio, and I don't even have Ethernet port (need to get a USB to Ethernet port adapter).

So will something happen with updates so that I will see the drivers change in device manager?

Many of the Intel drivers will state the version of installer and not the version of driver.

For instance installer version "a" may suit 4 devices and driver installer version "b" may suit 5 devices.

Now the version of the driver in the installer for "b" may be the latest version for the latest device however there may not be any changes in 3 out of 5 devices if they are all working correctly. A device with some fixes/enhancements may likewise have the driver updated in the newer version. The un-updated drivers will still be included in the newer installer for convenience.

My XPS 8300 has Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility (Chipset INF) 9.4.0.1026 installed but in the device manager the drivers are at 6.3.9600.16384.

If the installers ran okay then the drivers should be installed correctly. If not you have to manually run the setup.exe (this is the ones from Dell and not directly from Intel). I actually have just made a video here on it:

Thanks.  I guess I'm up to date.  I didn't know that the version numbers would not change in device manager.  The Intel inf utility also finishes intantly after the lengthy unpack.  I though that was weird.

All the Intel 8 items under system still show 1017, and

Intel(R) 8 Series USB Enhanced Host Controller #1 9C26 (under USB controllers section), mine shows ver 6.3.9600.16384 6/21/2006

Which is the same as you.  I was worried about that one because, following someone else's advice, I had removed the driver prior to running Dells chipset update utility.  I think it said ver 1017 as well prior to removal.

One last thing I did was try to go back and run Dell's chipset utility for Windows' 8.1 thinking that might have a different effect after running the Intel inf utility.  It prompted that the version on my machine was more recent.  Weird since both state ver 1024.
