what is the largest cpu i can install.....i7-640m ? or i7-840qm ?

sweeeeeeeet !!! just talked with a guy from another forum and he's running a i7-620m in his inspiron 1764.....it originally came with an i5-430m, just like mine.

the dell manual shows i7's in its cpu options, it has the hm55 chipset wich supports them too.

I see that. What I've said is that the system was not shipped with i7 CPUs, meaning there's a good chance they won't work. There are plenty who've tried to upgrade i5 Studio and Studio XPS models to i7s, finding that the CPUs aren't supported. There's a very high probability your upgrade won't work - so be sure you can return any CPU you buy.

the manual i was referring to is for my model, I put in my service tag number, downloaded the service guide
went to basic specifications...and there it is....i7

The manual you're referring to covers multiple models - I can't find any reference that the system ever shiipped with an i7. That being the case, you're welcome to try - but expect failure.

ivy bridge i5 will not work. they are 3rd generation. you need a 1st generation cpu. i3,i5, or i7. your laptop has the hm55 chipset, you can use any of these...http://ark.intel.com/products/43183/Intel-BD82HM55-PCH

Hopefully everyone reads this post to whom owns the Dell 1764. NOT! all cpu will work. Ordered the i7 720QM, installed it and Laptop did not start. Double checked everything and all was intact and nothing. Reinstalled the old i5 430m and all was good. So I revert back to this forum and the link to Dell's chipset HM55 to check the specs of the i7 720qm. Scrolling down the specs and there it was " NO Integrated graphics " as the old i5 430m does. Highest cpu would be the i7 620m which has the integrated graphics.

I just tried this and it did NOT work. when powered on the power LED came on but the screen remained black (no backlight) and fan remained off. Tried 3x with 430m and 840qm, only the dual core succeeded to boot.
I have an ATi powered system as well (HD5450). Could I get more information about your 1764 if you still have it? GPU, motherboard p/n, if your CPU is a ES/QS/OEM model, anything that could be helpful in making my system work also.
