inspiron 6400 won't start
my inspiron 6400 will no longer start. the green power light comes on when i connect it to the AC power supply, and it makes some noises but then nothing and the battery light flashes orange. I have had warnings that the battery is reaching the end of its life for many months now, but this hasn't concerned me as i am happy to use the AC power. is it possible that the battery has died and the computer needs a functioning battery to operate even on mains power? Or is there some other likely problem. My toshiba laptop works with the battery removed.

The system does not need a battery to operate - if it won't operate without the battery, replace the power adapter with a new Dell one. If it won't work with that, you've a bad mainboard.

I thought my Inspiron 6400 had died too, someone suggested it was a problem with the motherboard. I haven't tried to use it for 3 months and was just about to bin it and replace it with a new laptop when the Coin-Cell battery on my desktop PC started to fail (the Windows date kept resetting itself to 2008) I replaced that battery and all was fine with my desktop. A couple of weeks later it occurred to me that the 6400, which was a year older than my desktop, might also have a failed coin cell battery (sometimes I'm a real quick thinker), which would mean the BIOS would not work and the computer would not start. So since I had a spare 3V Lithium CR2032 battery, I did a battery replacement. Check the manual - Change replace spare parts / remove hinge / lift keyboard/ replace coin cell battery. Hey presto my Inspiron 6400 works again. #
Its worth trying and its only £2 for the battery in any supermarket in the UK.
