light and dark patches on screen
I have a studio 15, 21/2 years old, 6 months out of warranty. 1600x900 screen
yesterday when i fired the laptop up, i got light and dark patches on screen much like when oil is soaked in to paper. blotchy. screen stays on for a while and then goes back to almost invisible dark.
external monitor gives no problem. back light? screen gone? any suggestions welcome, will ring Dell tomorrow but like a heads up, thanks.

Well, credit due where it is due.
Although my warranty had recently run out, Dell repaired it for me. The people who I brought the laptop to as directed by Dell, replaced the screen in 20 minutes while I waited. That is excellent customer service, thanks Dell.

Sounds like a back light or inverter.

OK i found ou that a bright torch displays content too dark to see normally on the screen, it looks even as well. So any idea inverter OR backlight?

The inverter needs to be matched to the backlight. Different manufacturers have different specs for the inverter and their backlight.
If you are going to replace it, replace it in a matched pair.
