problems with memory upgrade on Dell Inspiron 6400
Hi all.
I have bought recently a new bar of 2GB of RAM and installed on my Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. The new memory is recognized, I can see it in BIOS. The problem I have is that my Windows XP is reporting just 768 MB of RAM. Also, I have run a System Information software and also I can see both memory modules into the summary.
On my system I have 1x512MB PC2-5300(the original of the laptop) and the new one 1x2GB Kingmax 667MHz PC2-5300. Prior to buy, I have verified the specs for my laptop and it seems that it supports up to 4GB.
Thank you for any suggestion which can help me figure out which seems to be the problem.
Cheers.

Your system's maximum memory is 2G -- not 4.

While some may have reported seeing 4G working, it's not guaranteed -- if you want to try that, it's likely you'll need a pair of matched soDIMMs - not the mismatched ones you have now -- but even then, there are no guarantees.

What is confusing me is that the BIOS see 2.5GB of RAM and also the System Information software, but not Windows XP. I'll try to install another OS, to see what it reports.
Many thanks anyway for your quick response.
Keep safe.

I have installed Windows 7 and it sees all the amount of memory, 2.5GB of RAM. So, it proved to be the OS which misinterpreted the amount of RAM.
