xps m170 blank screen and strange driver issues

I have a dell xps m170 with the nvidia geforce 6800 ultra video card.  During post and at the windows loading screen there are artifacts in regular line intervals on the screen.  After windows loads and should be going to the log on screen, the screen goes blank.  When I boot in safe mode there are no problems with the video.  When I completely uninstal the drivers for the video card all starts up just fine.  However as soon as I reinstall the drivers  (downloaded from dell), I get a black screen when I reboot after the install.  The artifacts even appear in the bios screen.  I have been unable to get an external monitor to work.  In safe mode I do not have access to the settings for multiple monitor support and with out the drivers, when booting normally, I also do not have access to settings for multiple displays (can't enable it).

Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be?  I'm hoping that my video card is not fried.

Welcome to the forums Jack :smileyhappy:

The fact everything is fine when you boot into safe mode, suggests it's a driver problem, rather than a problem with the graphics card irself.

It would be worth trying a set of newer modified drivers from LaptopVideo2Go.  Just remember to download/use the INF file (from the same page as whatever drivers you use) as well.

They provide a handy 'Quickstart Guide' you can follow, if you're not too sure what to do ;)

Thank you for the reply and and the advice.  My video card now appears to be functioning properly thanks to the info and the modded inf file with the older more stable driver for my card.  I do have questions out of curiousity.  The artifacts were showing up in the bios menu and during the post screen, how is that possible? Does the bios in the m170 run off of the nvidia driver?  I don't really have a clue as to why the problem occured either.  I haven't updated my video card driver in a long time and had not changed any of the settings that I'm aware of.
