Am I installing windows 10 incorrectly?

  • Hello, I am not sure if I am trying to reinstall windows wrong, but I have had it with trying. My dell inspiron 15 3358 all of a sudden started running horribly and so I decided to uninstall and reinstall windows 10. My computer was running on windows 10 at the time. I got a Sandisk cruzer Glide 32GB, I downloaded on another computer the media creation tool. I downloaded windows 10 onto it and then nothing. When I try to boot from it from Legacy, I get the windows logo and a loading circle which then goes to a black screen.

The computer is still on but nothing happens past that point, and I have left it for hours. When I try to boot it from the UEFI SanDisk option I get white broken horizontal lines and then the windows logo and a loading circle. then it goes to a thin line of white broken dots move across the screen. I have also left this for hours, but it never gets past this. I have watched a ton of videos and tried every tip and trick I have seen but I get nowhere. This has been frustrating because I thought this was going to be a easy fix but has turned into a headache.

I am not sure if I am just royally missing something or if I am doing something wrong. I have wondered if maybe its the USB stick. I am hoping you all have some answers. I am frustrated that I turned my computer into nothing more than a paperweight, but I am willing to try anything you guys might suggest.

Thank you

Hello chino de oro I got a new message but it doesn't mean anything to me. I attached a photo of it. Also I am able to type here. Hopefully this means something to you.

It is self explanatory option for Windows recovery, which doesn't yield good result (old Windows).  You may have known the processes and tried to repair several times already but since it didn't work, let take a step back and restart the process again.  Review my very first post and click on the link to download windows creation tool to a working computer.  Plug in your new USB drive, double click on the downloaded file to run.  Select Windows 64 bit, select language, tick the box to install on a different machine, select to make a USB and pointing to your new USB drive.  The creation tool will run by itself and it will notify you when the process is complete.  You use the newly create USB drive to test your laptop to see if the Windows installation can progress further than before.  If it works, it is up to you to interrupt the installation and will attempt later to install on an SSD or you can proceed and perform installation onto the old hard drive.  Either ways, review the steps in the link to delete all partition on the drive and let Windows does the rest.  If it does not work, review the BIOS settings and reset cmos, then running test again.  All the processes and suggestion were provided.  Go over to see if you may have missed anything.

If it didn't work due to hardware failure, it won't work period.

If it didn't work due to user error, then there is possibility it will work now.

Assuming you are using Linux now, how would you install Windows operating system to the machine?

Sorry I have been busy I haven't had time to fiddle with my computer again. So just to make sure that I am not messing anything up. I deleted media creation tool, redownloaded it. I am putting windows on the new USB stick. On my dell I have the bios set to UEFI, legacy mode is off, and the secure boot is on. SATA is set to AHCI.

Did I miss anything or forget anything?

Sounds good.  You're set to go.

Note that secure boot is optional.  Example, some people turn it off so machine can boot with after market graphics cards.  For a laptop, it's a good security feature to be enable.  But you can always disable it later on, if needed.

The last time I tried this with the security boot disabled I got this thin line of white dots that would move across the black screen. I don't know what that meant.

If I have to guess, it was the Dell logo, which got skewed and stretched into a 3D (like world map).  Appearance of many horizontal dash across the screen.  Addition to the circle of dots (progress ring) broken up into flatline, creating an illusion of moving background.

I've seen weird things at Windows setup screens.  Let see if I can borrow any from this community and I will update my post.

Edit to add picture:  found one within allowable editing time, although it is not the same as described

I don't want to jinx anything but I think this is going better. The last time I tried to install this it went from the windows logo to the weird line of dots I told you about in under five minutes. I am still on the windows logo screen. So either it is working or I am just gonna be stuck on this screen again. I am gonna plug in my computer again and let it run over night.

I am not sure if this matters but I had accidently installed windows on the go onto a USB stick before I posted on here and got my computer to boot from that. Only getting that to boot up took me about 4 hours.

This USB stick has a light on it and it is still blinking every once in a while, as window tries to load.

So bad news is after 8 hours I was still on the windows logo and loading circle. Good news is it never went to the line of weird random white dots. Im just so frustrated with this. Im gonna rant for a minute. I'm mad at myself for doing this which reading everything online should only take 2 hours at most and ive lost more then a month. I don't get why my computer is rejecting this reinstallation like its toxic waste. I also dont get it because I've tested my hard drive and it says its fine. I can hear it working if i put my laptop up to my ear. I agree with you chino de oro dell putting the hard drive under the palm rest is a bad idea.

I thought the stupid design which ive had to replace twice was the only stupid design. Luckily I do have a back up computer. Even though I hate it. Right now I don't have the money to get a new SSD or HDD. So I guess im going to have to use that. I want to thank you for trying to help me. I only habe myself and this dang computer to blame.

As I mentioned before, the USB should take only 1 to 2 minutes to boot.  Anything longer would indicate some kind of error and/or issue.  No intention to lay blame here but user error can also contributed to a failed installation.

I am disappointed as well.  Although I contribute my time and sharing my knowledge to help out community members.  I do not like to waste a lot of time to repeat or going through a 20 questions which many are not even related or helpful to resolve the main issue.  Usually, my first 3 posts should contain enough information to walk someone through the process and solving their issue.

It's your right to save money and not wanting to spend extra to replace components.  But insisting on installation over the same hardware and component settings that had multiple failed results before, all efforts and times are just wasted.

My last suggestion for your thread is to go over the installation with different hardware and software settings.  Only checking for USB loading time.  Each testing process should take only a few minutes, no sit and wait, and no actual installation will be perform.  When you identify the cause by getting a normal load time, you can decide a more permanent setup and installing your Windows.

  • First test is removing your hard drive from the laptop and boot with the installation USB to see if you can get load time right a way.  Of course, windows can't find a destination source and installation will be aborted.
  • Next test will be using a different USB port until you can find one that have instant boot time.
  • These following test will require BIOS setting change, so you must make sure to save BIOS changes prior to each reboot.
  • Change boot mode to Legacy and save, after reboot, select F12 and boot the USB under legacy boot group.
  • Test with boot mode =  UEFI and secure boot =  disable (enable legacy option ROM)
  • Test with boot mode =  Legacy and secure boot off.

To sum up, this machine had been working for years, when it started failing, a new coin cell for maintenance and/or a OS reset would have resolve the sluggish issue.  It's still not too late for fixing it.  Currently, the machine does have power, responding to your command, and BIOS seems to be functional.  You should be able to install Windows easily.  A mistake must has been made during the process (user error), in combine with hardware condition (HDD, battery).  They hindered the installation process.  Add to that, you may have made situation appeared to be more difficult than it really is.

At the end, working or not, you still gain more experience and perspective through the process.

Is the coin cell battery and the HDD battery the same thing or is there another battery in the hard drive? Also, I went over step by step with you what I was going to do to reinstall on a completely new USB drive. You confirmed it and I didn't vary from what I said at all.

I also went through the test you told me to I will post the results below.

Boot mode is set to: UEFI secure boot off; = windows logo then the white dot line with all three USB ports.

Boot mode is set to UEFI: secure boot mood on = stuck on windows screen with loading cycle.

Legacy boot mode, secure boot off, windows logo fades to black screen.

Legacy boot mode secure boot on, window logo fades to black screen.

Re:  Is the coin cell battery and the HDD battery the same thing or is there another battery in the hard drive?

You weren't seriously asking this type of question.  Hard drive in your laptop does not have or use battery.  A link to coin cell battery replacement was posted on 25th and followed by another post with explanation the function of coin cell battery.  It's a low cost maintenance task but it resolved BIOS issues many times.  The main purpose for removing battery temporarily was to reset cmos, restoring BIOS to its proper functions.  And people would reinstall with a brand new fresh cell because old battery dying after 5 years of use.

Note in my previous post, I was disappointed at the outcome, not at you, and not to lay blame when I suggested that user error could be a contribute factor.  A reasoning for reviewing the process.  At one point, I did confirmed to your BIOS settings, it was good to go.  No need to be on defensive and focusing on past event.

Making an installation drive and performing clean Windows installation is simple and straight forward process.  Many people successfully did it for the first time in their life.  All they need is proper guidance and good instruction.  On one hand, I tried to provide detailed instructions, and helpful suggestions.  On the other hand, because you have tried numerous attempts before, my approach methods and provided info weren't taken seriously.  But from some of your questions, I have doubtful concern about the knowledge and understanding.  And I started to think that some steps in the process hadn't been taken and certain information were not understood or getting across properly.  But with respect and not causing any discomfort feeling, I did not ask to confirm every detail steps taken as it seems offensive.

I also know that following detailed instruction don't always get success result.  For example, two of my latest contribution threads, this post had a successful by following instruction, while this post yielded no result although user managed it with a work around method.  The point is, my effort can get a disappointment result, but no one fault, all users tried their best effort as well.

I ran out of suggestion for your issue.  Maybe going over the steps and linked instruction, you can see if anything amiss or had not been performed, and considering if it worth the repair.
