Because of a forum software glitch, only you can see your screenshot postings.  Thus please explain more what the issue is and always include the PC Model number.

There are some Dell specific drivers, but I've found the Win 10 installed drivers are usually OK.  I added a second (dual boot) Win 10 on a new Dell laptop and did not have to install any Dell drivers, all the needed drivers were installed by Win 10/Microsoft.

Again, what specific Inspiron Desktop model?

You currently have installed = Intel HD Graphics 4400 9/29/16, 20.19.15.4531

and get the error installing the same version from Dell? = 1/5/17, 20.19.15.4531 A03, 916YM, (Inspiron 3647/3847, Vostro 3800/3900/3900G/3902)

I am having the same problem with an Inspiron 3847.  I go to the driver download page and do the detect my computer thing and download the video driver.  I get the message that the driver is not for this computer.  I tried the chat but they wanted $239 to renew my service contract before they would point me to the correct file that I should have been provided by the download page.  There is something wrong with the file or the detect my computer function.

That is despite the fact Dell has always warned against using drivers directly from Intel, and advised to use only drivers written for Dell products.

Who said that?

Now-days, most drivers come from Windows10-Update (especially something generic like an Intel video driver).

For Nvidia, I just get a stable WHQL release from nvidia.com (and Windows-10 still tends to toss me the critical ones).

And for old-machines, I've found that Windows10-Update is your best-bet.

Keep your Device-Manager clean and driver-installs lean.

Hey, I'm a poet and didn't even know-it.

Why do you think you need updated drivers?

Did you select the correct version of Windows on the support page before downloading any drivers?

I would avoid "auto-detect" and just manually pick the driver(s) you need. You can always look in Device Manager to see what (hardware) is installed so you can get the right driver for the right hardware. There are only 2 choices for Win 10 video drivers, one for onboard Intel HD Graphics, and one for nVIDIA Geforce GT6XX/7XX/8XX/9XX video cards (assuming you have one of those add-in NVidia cards).

You want both the Intel HD Graphics driver and the NVidia card driver, even if you only use the NVidia card.

@RoHe I have a program that stopped working and after talking to the developer he said that there was a Windows update that came through with a problematic video driver and recommended that I re-install it from the manufacture.

I only have the option to download the "Intel HD 4000 Series Graphics Driver".  Windows 10 was already selected before I did the download.  However when I try to install it the program bombs out as the screen shot shows.

Did they tell you which video driver (Intel, AMD or NVidia) was "faulty"?

What add-in video card do you have?

You can go directly to Dell's support page for this model and manually download the drivers for your system. I -personally- don't always trust those automatic apps telling me what drivers I need.

You could also go to the Intel download center and use their wizard to scan your hardware and offer you suitable Intel HD Graphics drivers.

@RoHe

We are using the onboard video.

Shouldn't the Dell website give me the correct driver?

No add-in video card?

You'd expect the site to give you the correct driver, if you manually look it up, but the automated driver search tool may be buggy. So find the driver manually on the support page for your system and try installing that yourself.

The other possibility is some recent Microsoft update is not compatible with the Intel Graphics driver that's being offered by Dell's update app. Intel has been changing things so quickly lately because of design flaws in their chips, it's hard to keep up..

And another thought... What version of the Intel HD Graphics driver is installed now, and what version failed to install?

There's another Inspiron thread saying they got that same error message when updating the Intel Graphics driver via Dell Update, but it appears they already have the exact same driver version installed now that the update is trying to install.

If that's your situation too, I suspect the error message is a mistake and it probably should be saying something like "the latest version is already installed"... ???
