Dimension 5150, PSU interchangeable?

The 5150/E510 systems do not use Dell proprietary power supplies, you can install most generic ATX power supplies with either a 24-pin or 20+4-pin main motherboard power connector.

As the 5150/E510 has an open back panel, a power supply with or without the on/off switch can be used and can be purchased from most local or online computer stores.

A power supply with a minimum of two SATA power connectors is needed.

Before 2002, Dell was using proprietary power supplies on their desktops, but since then they have been using standard ATX units, w/o the on/off switch.

There are still some of Dell high end and slimline computers, that still have proprietary power supplies, mostly due to their shape and size, luckily the 5150/e510 is not one of them

OK, Thanks I just needed  to be sure before I took the plunge,sometimes the more you read the more confused you get!

Hi Bev,Thanks for your reply that sounds good.I`ve been reading on another forum who says while some generic psu`s look simular and have 24pin mobo connection they are wired differently and might fry said motherboard if connected..

Hi Bev, 

My Precision T3400 with an original Dell 375w psu N375p-00 died on me yesterday and only shows an amber light when mains power applied,  assuming that the psu is the problem can it be replace with a non standard psu?
