Explicit instructions for installing NVMe M.2 SSD to Inspiron 5680
Because the OEM Sata III M.2 SSD is a marginal 128GB, and since I have just now discovered that the 5680 motherboard ostensibly supports NVMe, it would have been terribly helpful if explicit instructions on how to upgrade from Sata III to NVMe were furnished. I just completed an upgrade to 2TB Sata III M.2, and probably would have gone for NVMe instead, if resources paved the way for installing an appropriate NVMe driver for example. The driver on my system supports only Sata III. Whatever that may or may not infer, we cannot know. Quality information is indispensable to quality downstream customization.

Although Dell has only validated sata M.2 ssd in 5680, user has validated that
“the Samsung 960 EVO NVMe M.2 2280 SSD worked” in 5680.
physical installation of NVMe ssd is straightforward.
“I got my Samsung 960 EVO NVMe to work after playing around in the BIOS for a bit. It was showing up on the first page under the list of HDD's, but it wouldn't let me install windows or it wouldn't recognize it outside of the BIOS.
I changed the SATA Operation on the Advanced tab to AHCI and that seemed to have fixed it.
I was able to clean install Windows through a USB drive that way on the SSD.”
