Graphics card Inspiron 580

Inspiron 580

Can I upgrade the graphics card to an Inspiron 580 desktop without changing the mother board? I have a new monitor that has higher resolution than the desktop puts out and now some of the newer software that I am trying to install "photoshop" indicates that my graphics card is not compatible.

Any help from the community would be greatly appreciated.

According to the minimum specs for Photoshop and based on Userbench lists here, the GT 1030 or the GTX 1050Ti should be compatible.

I'm writing this reply with an Inspiron 580 with a relatively new A2000 Ada 12GB that uses 70 watts and no power connector.  The card does anything I want on a 4K monitor but cost $350.  Using the original power supply, I can only use cards that don't require additional power connections beyond the PCIe slot.  I've also used GT 730 cards (no true 4k although it could come close) and I'm sure that the GT 1650s or any other card without 6 or 8 pin connectors will also work.  Want to go whole hog?  The newest RTX 4000 Ada sff with 20GB VRAM only needs 70 watts (no power connector from the power supply) was recently released and will probably work in the Inspiron 580...but it'll set you back around $1500.

If you don't want to spend that kind of money, start with the GTX 1650 and move down from there (1050, 1030, 9xx,...730)  Make sure it doesn't require a 6pin or 8pin connector if you have an original power supply.  Look for HDMI connectors and/or Display Port connectors on the card that match your monitor in any video card that you find.  They'll likely produce the output you are looking for.

The RTX A2000 is an Ampere card - not Ada as I mentioned in the previous posts.

If you want to change processors and will be using a separate graphics card, the Inspiron 580 with iCore processors on LGA 1156 sockets and A07 Bios will run faster first generation i7 Nehalem Processors that lack integrated graphics, including the i7-880, i7-870, ... as well as their sister processors Xeon x3480, x3470,.... 

My machine originally used the i5-550 2 core processor and I've upgraded to the 4-core/8-thread Xeon x3480 (95 watts) with 32GB of RAM (4x8GB 1600MHz that run at the fastest speed supported - 1333MHz).  Except for the RAM, processor and graphics card, the rest of the system is the same as when I bought it from Dell in 2011.  I have no doubt that it would run Photoshop, most games, etc. 

The i7's and Xeon processors that fit the LGA 1156 socket lack AVX, AVX2, and AES (hardware encryption) instruction sets that came along later.  So it's a bit slower in highly mathematical tasks and much slower with anything involving encryption. 

The two core i5-680 is the fastest processor with integrated graphics that uses the LGA 1156 socket.  It came along late enough that it has AES encryption.  But even with that processor, the integrated graphics on the Inspiron 580 just doesn't cut it with today's high-res monitors and graphics needs.  Getting a decent graphics card (<75 watts - $,) 4 core / 8 thread processor - $30, and 16GB RAM ($20) can extend the life of this machine substantially without much additional cost.

Be careful buying the GTX 1650s and 1050s - many manufacturer's versions require additional 6 pin connectors that the stock Inspiron power supply doesn't have.  Make sure you see a picture of the top of the card that doesn't show a connector before buying online.  NVidia isn't supporting the 700 series cards with driver updates anymore so anything much older than the 10 series probably isn't worth buying for Photoshop. 

If you can afford one, the new RTX A2000 Ada with either 6GB (~$300 ebay) or 12GB ($350-450) will last far longer than your Inspiron and will be a good card for another decade while the 1650 lacks lots of modern features and will likely only get another few years of NVidia driver support.  I was looking at both the 1650 and the RTX A2000 Ada for my Inspiron a few months ago and decided the newer card was far more capable and worth the extra $200 or so.

Thanks for the reply but  at this point i think i'll wait until the holidays and purchase a new computer that will take care of my needs.
