Inspiron 3250, GPU upgrade, #2

Question

So, I have a really small Dell Inspiron 3250 desktop and I’ve seen a lot of people saying it can fit a GT 1030 low profile and nothing else.. is this true? I was looking at like a GTX 1050 low profile and I’m wondering why this wouldn’t work considering they’re almost the same dimensions, the GTX 1050 is only bigger by about an inch or two. Is that really all it takes to be too big?

The low profile 1050Ti needs to be single slot width (not double slot) because the PCIe slot where you will install gpu is right next to psu, so no room left for double slot gpu. You will have to place psu outside case completely if you want to install double slot gpu,

regarding Dell proprietary 8 pin psu, I have a discussion elsewhere on this. The 8 pin CPU MB has yet to be verified to be universal in Dell psu. GTX 1050 recommended system psu is 300W. your SFF psu is only 180W. therefore not going to work. the card's TDP is 75W.

interestingly, GT1030 minimal system power recommendation is 300W too. the card's TDP is 30W. so the GT1030 is not a good choice either.

So, if I upgraded the psu, would something like a low profile gtx 1050ti fit if I took the side panel of my case off?

I have just upgraded my Inspiron 3250 with a new GPU - Geforce GT1030 - and this is how I did it.

1) I purchased a new ATX PSU (which is really for a new build that I intend to make later on)

2) I purchased a 24 to 8 pin adaptor from MODIY

3) removed the existing 180W PSU and installed the new one outside the case

4) performed some minor surgery on the case to the GPU would fit

5) turned it all on and the fans started spinning- big relief lol -.

6) It all works just fine and I cannot see that a bigger GPU that fitted the PCI slot would not work either; although not prepared to try it given the cost of GPU's right now

A bit out of date for this forum but Hope this helps someone.
