Inspiron 3670 with windows 10 64 bit. System was bought new 8/2018 and has an i5 8400. Was wanting to upgrade to i9-9900. The only info I could fine is the chipset was B360 and it stated the BIOS was Dell?
The Specs for the Inspiron 3670 says it supports 9th Gen i3, i5, i7, even though you have an 8th Gen i5. But it doesn't list specific CPUs, which only Dell can provide. At the minimum, you should update to the latest version of BIOS and chipset drivers before swapping CPUs.
I think you may have issues if you try to install a 9th Gen i9, assuming BIOS supports an i9. Again, only Dell will know for sure. But, I see posts on other forums saying that motherboards with the B360 chipset that's in your Inspiron aren't up to the task with an i9. Even boards with the Z370 chipset appear to have issues with the power-hungry i9.
And then there's the heat. An XPS 8930 with an i9 comes with an upgraded heat sink and fan because of all the heat generated by the i9. So will the stock Inspiron heat sink be sufficient?
