Inspiron 3670, compatible processors

The 3670 shipped with both i5-8400 and i5-9400 processors.  I am about to buy a 3670 that came with a i5-8400 originally, and I'd like to put a 9400 in it.  With there be issues if I do that?  Will I need a BIOS update?

Second, related question: is the i5-9400F compatible?  I'll have dedicated graphics, so that's not a problem.  I'd prefer to get the 9400F to save some cash.

Always good to have the latest BIOS before swapping CPUs, if it's not already installed. Just keep in mind there's always a chance a BIOS update will fail and brick the motherboard.

Do the BIOS update manually, eg do not use SupportAssist or Dell Update to manage the process. Do it manually by downloading the file from Dell['s support page onto the desktop. Close all open apps and open windows and disable your antiviral app. Then right-click the downloaded BIOS file and "Run as administrator". Do not interrupt the update or turn the PC off. It should reboot automatically when the update is finished. Then make sure your antiviral app is re-enabled and running.

Don't know the differences between a 9400 and 9400F CPU so can't comment on that. Only Dell may know the answer to this question, but search this forum to see if anyone has posted about upgrading this PC model to a 9400F CPU...

Original unit has Gimped 290W power supply.  Faster CPU's would require the OPTIONAL power supply.

The internal parts page shows 290w standard with 365w OPTIONAL.

I have put in a 750W power supply into my Dell Inspiron 3670. I found out the CPU socket of this dell is LGA 1151. The CPU is a 9th Gen Intel Core i5 9400 (6-Core, 9MB Cache, up to 4.1GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology).

I need something faster, though i don't want to spend more than $500 on a CPU, i just need something faster for video editing.

I looked up LGA 1151 socket CPU's on Newegg and found this list:

What do you guys think is the best value for video editing?. I am playing GTA 5 and record video. Right now it's decently fast but I need it to be a bit faster. If you ended up getting an upgrade let me know here what you purchased.

@Seekdestroy16  - How much RAM is in your system?

An SSD might speed things up too...

I have 16GB's of RAM and also a 1TB SSD. I've already upgraded everything except the CPU.

learn that only the maker of our video processor app, can answer this, (none stated nor VERSION)

what CPU will work better., giving your ram now, SSD and current CPU.?

only they KNOW THAT< they complied it , not DELL or anyone else. read the wiki on COREs and speed.?

The C code (If is) is a huge job getting it to go fast, given vast PCs made, 1 to 18 cores, and 1 or 2 CPU. no lie.

have you ever run a compiler and seen the choices there, ? (Cores ,threads and even CPU counts?)?

I'd just hate to see you spend $500 for NOTHING gained, sure would not want that.

and have you seen the windows 10 ( turning on that? ) per this.

In windows 10 , click SET AFFINITY, and priority , see if that helps your unstated APP.

some apps only use 1 core, others charge $$$$ more of that or 2 CPU usage. some limit it to 4 cores.

what you have there only the APP maker knows, talk to them first, then build PC based on what they said

or upgrade the APP, if that is cure. Some works stations have 2 CPU, I have a HP Z600 that does.

quote

In reality, how effective this is depends entirely on the operating system software and the application software; OSes and applications that aren’t written (coded) to take advantage of multi-core processors won’t run any faster than they would on a single CPU. Thus, older OSes and programs are unlikely to see any benefit from modern processors.

and here

set Priority to high and affinity to  (all processors) CPU. (task manager, + Details click your app and set this)

good luck to you finding a match.

Just my opinion, but invest in a top end graphics card for video editing.
