Inspiron 3847 GPU upgrade question
Hello. I have a 2014 Inspiron 3847 i3-4130 3.4ghz 8gb ram with 4400 onboard graphics running Win 7 and am looking to install a graphics card. Have read many posts and recommendations on different boards. Narrowed it down to 2 and am wondering which would be better or faster. Vision Tech Radeon R7 240 2gb ddr3 or 5540 2gb ddr3 ?

never mind the Dell recommendation which is usually the slowest card.
The new VT R7 240 in your link uses short bracket but 3847 (minitower) requires full height bracket.
Also if you want R7 240 look for GDDR5 version, not ddr3 (older and slower).

the i3 (2 core) is not very good for gaming. consider upgrade to i5 or i7 4th gen (4 core).
here is comparison of i3 vs i5 using same R7 250 for low setting gaming. the i5/7 are modestly better at 1080p. The R7 250 is just a weak gpu (but it is 50% faster than 240). so R7 240 gaming performance is quite poor.

In Windows 10 I do not manually modify device manager unless there is absolutely no other choice. when you take out the old its display adapter automatically disappears from dev mgr and when Win 10 detects new card it will try to download the most appropriate driver for you. This is more true for nvidia than AMD. so if after 30 min of PC on internet and you do not see new driver being automatically installed then I would download AMD recommended driver for this model and install it.

no need to worry about onboard graphics. It can stay. you do not need to disable anything.

I did notice that on the VT HD540 that Dell recommended part # 900356 for my service tag, but I did see the same VT looking and described card with several different part numbers. Does that matter?

if it is a new old stock, its fan should not make much noise. R7 240 is a low end gpu. TDP is only 30w. if chassis temp is not high the card should be able to stay cool without much effort. if used card then hard to tell because fan may have worn out.

both are new old stock. Since my current graphics are onboard, the hd5450 manual says for Pre-Installation to:
1. Uninstall the display adapter software (drivers and utilities) in Control Panel
2. Disable video adaptor in Device Manager
Never read this in any of the numerous posts/threads I have read thru on this forum.
Would the procedure be the same for the R7 240 ?

Do either of these cards require additional power from the PSU or do they get power from the PC!-e plug in?
