Inspiron 3847, Intel H81 Express iGPU?
My graphics card now only works randomly, the fan is broken. It usually crashes on boot up or a few minutes later, but sometimes it can run for a few hours fine. For this reason I would always use the Intel integrated graphics card on the processor, but every so often i boot my pc up and i get the white screen and big graphics telling me to switch to HDMI graphics card slot. So I would follow those instructions and reboot, but once at my desktop screen I would switch back to the Intel chip.
I would do this by opening up Device Manager in Windows 10, and select View and Hidden Devices, then Display adapters, I would then Disable Nvidia and enable Intel 4600 HD.
My problem now is that when I open Device manager there is no Intel listed at all, just the Nvidia GeForce GT720. If I disable this it defaults to the Microsoft Basic Display adapter. The HDMI connection is still through the Graphics card slot.
I have ran two Dell Support tests and it says all drivers are up to date, the full 40 minute test just crashes when it tests the graphics card, it doesnt give me any results, just reboots the pc.
I dont know how to permanently have my pc only use the Intel Chip graphics card, or at least bring it back up under Device Manager? I did try to remove the nvidia card completely but got into a bit of a mess and thats how the fan broke.
Sorry for long post Thanks for any help you can give.

first off that GPU card is bad, if you dont replace it's fan it is doomed, to overheating so remove it. RIP card.
time to kick it to the curb FOR SURE, (lacking spare fan) The fan is NOT OPTIONAL.
on ebay there are 1000s of cheap $10 cards, sold there used, endless. that work in 2d ok and weak 3d endless.
my point (less than a new fan !)
then boot to windows. and do an online update of the the iGPU driver . Seen IN DM for sure.
In BIOS look for Video tab , make sure if that is there its set to AUTO. (hint , not Pci-e) AUTO.
with the card removed DM will in fact show the iGPU now.
be internet connected first, so PnP can WORK
steps,
1: in DM remove the old CARD driver, (right click it and PICK uninstall) now its gone.
2: power down, pull AC plug, push power 3 times for 3 seconds or until all fans stop twitching, (discharge caps)
3: remove the old card, (use the unlock lever do not force any X16 slot locks, push lever to unlock... )
4: the card is now gone. AC power cord/cable plugged back in.
5: in bios, turn on Auto for VIDEO, (mine has this not sure yours, dell does not document BIOS) one must look.
6: then boot the PC, to windows,
7: get ethernet cable to router, so PnP can work.
8: boot PC and let PnP do its THING. if not happy, right click the DM (iGPU) line and pick update, driver,
MS has your driver that is a fact (via intel igpu support)
I have no idea at all what CPU you have , sure Hasswell. but they made them with 3 iGPU.
4400,4600,and 5200, let PnP find it and load the driver from MS. just let it.

Hi I greatly appreciate the replies and Im not wishing to argue, but both these suggestions feel like I would be best just taking it into a shop and getting them to do it lol.
The thing is the graphics card has been like this for over a year, I was able to simply switch it off and use the i7 intel chips hd4600 integrated card via the Device Manager settings. This solution worked fine, except for eachtime there was a windows update, that usually forced me to switch back to the graphics card.
My problem now is that when I open Device manager, even with Hidden options selected, the only option showing is the Nvidia card, theres no mention of the intel hd at all.
I have tried going to intels site and checking for drivers etc and it states all drivers are installed and up to date, i cant understand where the option for the integrated chip has gone in Device manager.

The Intel HD Graphics are on the CPU, not on a separate chip.
If you're not comfortable opening the case to remove the add-in video card and reset BIOS by removing and then reinstalling the battery, you probably should take it to reputable PC shop. Or maybe a geeky friend can help.
The shop can either remove the add-in card and switch over to onboard Intel HD Graphics or install a replacement add-in card. In that case, be a good idea to do a little homework so they don't try to sell you a card that's more or less than you need. So search these forums to see what others may have said about video cards in the 3847, keeping your personal usage in mind, eg, writing docs, checking email, surfing the net, vs playing games, watching video, photoshop, etc.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do...

Thanks again, I am slowly coming round to the idea of going into a shop, I just cant understand why the option of disabling the Nvida card and enabling the intel HD on the chip has disappeared from Device manager.
I wont bother replacing the graphics cards as the integrated one was more than suffice, just cant figure out how to get it on again.
Yesterday I did a full reset of system on Windows 10, but its still not there when I open Device Manage.

If Intel Graphics aren't not seen in Device Manager even after reloading Windows, it sounds like BIOS needs to be cleared.
Find somebody to clear BIOS by removing the motherboard battery as I posted above and see if that solves the problem.

Since posting this thread, I am now getting pm's from "Dell-cares" asking me to pm them my service tag, even though the first thing in the youtube video about service tags is never post it?

ronin4,
To clarify. They are not asking you to post the computer service tag number on a public thread. They are sending you Private Messages asking for the computer service tag number. You would reply to one of those Private Messages with the computer service tag number.
