Inspiron 580, CPU i5-760

My parents have an old Inspiron 580 with a Core i3 550 and I wanted to upgrade it to Windows 10 since Windows 7 is inching closer to end of life. When I tried to upgrade, it told me whatever version of Intel HD Graphics onboard wasn't supported and wouldn't install. I ordered an old Nvidia GTX 650 for $30 off eBay to modernize graphics (DirectX 9 is minimum spec for Windows 10), and figured I might as well upgrade to a quad core CPU while I'm in there, but I can't tell what's supported on the Inspiron 580 support page, just says "Intel Core i3 and Core i5" in the PDF of the manual.

Socket LGA 1156 is compatible with the i5-760, and I found one on eBay for $11, but figured it'd be smart to double check before buying.

I know this is old but I wanted to chime in. The Inspiron 580 supports a max CPU of 1st gen i7-880. But they are rare and expensive like $90. I went with i7-870 which can be had for $25. The only difference is a 2.93 clock speed on the 870 vs 3.06 clock speed on the 880.

I upgraded from an i3. The i7-870 is still capable for everything and some gaming.

Also, the max supported by Dell ram is 8GB DDR3. But I have successfully upgraded to 16GBs, 4x4GB sticks.

Only Dell will know for certain which CPUs are supported. But their list will only mention which ones they've tested/validated in this model.

So have you searched this forum to see what CPUs others may have installed in this PC model? And it's more than just the CPU socket. It's BIOS and the Intel chipset on the motherboard. You have the Intel H57 chipset in the 580. So before going too far, check this list to see if H57 supports whatever flavor of the I5-760 CPU you're considering. And even if it does, that doesn't mean Dell's BIOS will support that CPU.

At minimum, make sure you have the latest BIOS version installed and running before you swap CPUs, in case Dell added support along the way for new(er) ones. And -obviously- you'll need a small tube of thermal paste to apply a thin, fresh coat to top of CPU and bottom of  heat sink when you swap in a new CPU...

You do not need to buy anything except a windows 10 Reinstall DVD.

You do need to clean install then use the windows 7 drivers for this model.

Not supported does not mean not working just not supported.

Windows 10 will install on this model clean from an OEM system builder DVD

with the "I dont have a key option"

You then go online and change the product key to the WIN7 key on the COA sticker and activate.

The audio and Video Drivers for this model are NOT native to windows.

Hello! I know this thread is old, but in case you read this and you don't mind to tell that CPU you used for the upgrade. Was it i5-760 finally? Thanks I'll appreaciate any comments.

@Rainite I just realized this is an old thread too, but I have the exact same Dell model and I upgraded mine with an i7- 870 that I purchased on eBay for $19. I also put in an AMD RX 580 video card and upgraded the RAM to 16 GB 4x4 cards. Everything worked without a problem once I got the proper drivers installed, but it booted up with no problem with the BIOS.
