Inspiron 620s, dual boot issue
I have been working on my mother-in-law's older computer. Its Windows 7 drive got corrupted, so she bought a used Windows 10 computer and was able to move most files over by booting Windows 7 in safe mode, no networking.
I put on a fresh Windows 10 on a 1 TB SSD on SATA0. Put in a 2 TB Seagate HDD for backup on SATA 3. SATA 2 has the DVD R/W. That all went smoothly.
Today I cloned her corrupted Windows 7 drive from the original 1 TB Seagate drive onto a new 1 TB SSD. I then installed only the 1 TB SSD in the system with the DVD R/W and booted on my Windows 7 DVD. Did a restore from an August 30 restore point and spent the morning using Windows Update and got it all up to date. I then hooked up the 2 TB Seagate HDD on SATA 3 and did a system image save onto the HDD. I then pulled the SSD and did a clone back to the original HDD and did a test boot to verify that all was okay on the HDD.
So far I felt good.
Now to the trouble, I then added the Windows 10 SSD to the mix and the system indicated a corrupted boot record.
The Windows 7 SSD got corrupted and I restored from the now master HDD.
Tried putting the renewed Windows 7 onto SATA 0 and Windows 10 onto SATA 1 and got the same problem.
I have successfully done this dual boot on an XPS 8700 and an Inspiron 620.
Ideas?

And I already know that Windows 7 support from Microsoft is finishing next week.

The BCD for windows 7 is not compatible with windows 10.
There is NO SUCH THING as dual boot.
Bios is not a boot manager.
SSD's are not optimized the same as HDD so cloning is not supported or recommended.
Defragging that is default for hard drive will WRITE an SSD to death in as little as 6 hours.

and run the PC w10 in VM mode and then run w7 img, all day long. even run 10 OS there. space willing./
this is answered here like 100 times, and google finds endless.
your CPU must be VT(x) rated, many are not, 620 stated, old but not one clue as to what CPU there,
if a Celeron fail.

The 620s has a core i7-2600K.

As I said, I have an XPS 8700 with one drive 7 and one drive 10, then choose which drive to boot with F12 on startup. I have the same on an Inspiron 620 and am successful. But it is not working on the Inspiron 620s.

So, if there is no such thing as dual boot, why can I do it on my XPS 8700 and my Inspiron 620?

I do have the scheduled defragmentation turned off for the drives.
Still wonder why I can't have the Windows 7 SSD and the Windows 10 SSD connected at the same time on the 620s when it works fine on the 620 and 8700. Dual booting working great on them.
Only have 8 GB on the 620s so had not really thought about a VM on it.

XPS 8700 is a class 2.3.1 UEFI system.
Inspiron 620 is a class 1 NON UEFI system.
It doesn't work and it wont work ever for the GPT dependent F12 UEFI boot. 620 classic bios uses mbr not UEFI.
The other issue is that all current systems are 64 bit only and windows 10 only.
Windows 7 will neither boot nor install on systems past skylake.
This is enforced by microsoft, AMD, NVIDIA, INTEL etc.
Windows 7 and 8 are now End of life as of Jan 14, 2020.
Windows 8.1 will be supported to Jan 10th 2023 but xp, vista, 7 and 8.0 are done.
Windows 10 1607 stopped being supported late 2018.
Windows 10 1809 1903 1909 64 bit are larger than 4.7 gigs and therefore there is also a problem with the WIM file and Fat32.
Install.wim is now too big for FAT32.

Got it to work. I had it working on a 620 mid tower and the 8700. I disconnected the Windows 10 boot SSD and the 2 TB utility SSD. I put the 1 TB Seagate Windows 7 drive back in and got it all up to speed including the drivers and Samsung Migration tools needed. Updated Windows 7 one last time. Rebooted onto the Windows 7 HDD. Ran the Samsung Migration utility and it worked.
Pulled the HDD, booted a few times on Windows 7 SSD. Reconnected the Windows 10 boot SSD and the storage SSD. Booted Windows 10 a couple of times. Booted Windows 7 using the F12 and choosing the correct boot drive. And it worked.
I am so glad that the dual boot is working like the other systems.
