Inspiron G5-5090, CPU cooler?

Hi,

Normally, I build my own PC but I decided to go with a pre-built with DELL because the deal was too good to pass up. It just arrived on my doorstep, (a new Inspiron G5-5090 desktop) and everything seems to be in order. The only thing I noticed is that the CPU cooler pictured on this non-Dell website is different than the one I got.

I got a much cheaper one. I'm guessing this is normal but I just wanted to make sure since this is my first DELL. I assume the one pictured on the website is reserved for different CPU's. I have a i7-9700 (non-K) if that matters.

Thanks,

  • Isn't there a 2070s model? For the g5 5090

@m1k3_13  - I tightened til there was good tension and a tiny bit of bend in the CPU cooler "legs". I gave it a wiggle to ensure it was all tensioned nicely and no chance of moving. I never use a powered screwdriver for work like this, too much risk of over tensioning IMHO.

@HotDogSlushie - I was talking about @m1k3_13 's 100deg issues

@Gummy - I have the 2070Super model with i7-9700, it runs the Dell OEM 460W PSU as supplied. Haven't had any issues.

Hi,

For those interested in a plug and play solution. The new arctic i13x (not the regular 13) cpu cooler is plug and play, no need to buy extra washers and bolts. You just remove the stock cooler, apply the washers and screw in the supplied studs and mount the cooler. The first time you boot up you get the diagnostic error but every boot thereafter goes fine (warm, cold) except when you enter the bios or press f12.

CPU temperature is +/- 70°C with 100 % CPU and 99% GPU. You can go lower but than you have to control the fan speed yourself (like with a voltage regulator). With the fan at 2000 rpm (max) I get +/- 60°C.

Here is a video of the installation of the cooler:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HF0DVp6Y4Vw

I still wasn't satisfied with my cpu temps as I was hitting extremely high temps on full load while running the Dell support Assist Hardware test .

I removed the T2 cooler, wiped down the old paste with isopropyl, reapplied new Arctic Thermal paste. Screwed down the cooler as much as i can evenly and still my temps are about 95C when running support assist Stress test. I remove the front fan and the other fan (behind the cooler) as they were not doing anything for temps. All i have is the 92mm Arctic exhaust fan and the CPU T2 cooler fan and my temps are still way to high. I now isolated the problem as i know its nothing to do with airflow as i removed the front 80mm intake fan...I really do think its the CPU cooler thats not really cooling my pc on full load but i have no other ideas. The way i mounted the cooler is with 4 M3 x 10mm screws with 4 M4 washers. I mounted them in a cross pattern to distribute the thermal paste evenly. Anyone have any further ideas?

Also forgot to mention i Removed the CPU itself to remove the old thermal paste properly. When i applied the new thermal paste it was the pea size method chose.

So as per @HotDogSlushie suggestion

I once again removed the T2 cooler, I then flipped the T2 cooler mounting brackets and reapplied thermal paste (arctic Silver) (in a pea size) bought new M3 X 10mm Screws and new M4 Washers. Screwed it down in a cross pattern to spread thermal paste evenly. I ran another Dell support stress test and hit a high of 92C. I didn't use any stand offs as i dont have any. Some other users in this thread dint have temp issues and they are not using stand offs. Im using Open Hardware monitor to monitor my temps but i have also used Core temps and both apps showed me the same temps. Anyone else have any other suggestions?

@Nafe75

Every time i lift the cooler from the cpu there is always a nice even amount of paste spread on the cpu. I dont think my temps are high because of my thermal application. I put a decent amount. I wish i knew the reason so i can finally fix this thing....what are your highest cpu temps when you run the dell support assist hardware test?

I haven't done the Dell one, I've tried the Intel one and also running Prime95, and also checked after gaming, it doesn't get over 70-74 across the cores. My only change is the CPU cooler as I switched back to the stock Dell fan in the back for now.

@m1k3_13 - i just used the whole tube of paste that was supplied with my cooler. Spread it all over the bottom of the cooler in a thin layer and bolted it down. No pea method or anything. Maybe try it again with more paste?

@Nafe75 @HotDogSlushie @HanoverB

Here is a pic of both sides of my T2 cooler bracket. Does anything look off to you guys at all?
I attached it with 4 M3 x 10mm screws and 4 M4 washers.
hope you guys can help.

@Nafe75

Alright so i just ran Prime95 for 15 min and i didn't hit higher than 72C. So maybe i'm thinking the Dell stress test is just a lot more intense than prime95 and most people on this thread aren't running the dell stress test so my cpu temps are actually normal? My idle is constantly 34-37C. what do you guys think?

@m1k3_13 - what do you use the machine for? Try running the CoreTemp app and see what it ends up peaking at when you game/photoshop/whatever - if it's well under 100deg then IMHO you should be fine. With my stock cooler I was in the 90s on Prime95, Intel Stress and also gaming, so I upgraded the cooler.

@Nafe75

 I pretty much just do some light gaming on my PC and basic work stuff. I just played COD MW2 Remastered Campaign and it peaked at 86C but i would say im averaging about 65C CPU temps. All im running is the 92mm Arctic exhaust fan with the T2 CPU fan/cooler. What do you think? Are those decent temps?

If it only peaks that high and then settles to the 60s (due to the cooler fan ramping up) then I think it's fine personally.

hi @m1k3_13

Looks similar to mine. Through normal use my temp is mid-high 30's (celsius!) and faming or a stress tests brings this to high 40's. Its never reached 60 since fitting it. Mid 60's to 70 was normal before changing my fan. Adding the f9 sikent rear fan made about 4 degrees improvement, max. But, a front one didn't make a noticeable difference other than boot up errors (which I cured with a snip of the tach-sense wire!
