2020 G5 Thunderbolt Issues
I have a new 2020 G5 i7 with the RTX 2060. The laptop is working great except for the Thunderbolt port.
The TB port works with a hard drive and a display adapter that I have. However I am having problems using my USB C monitor or any display adapter that provides USB PD.
The monitor/USB PD display adapter works the first time, but after unplugging the cable, the port will not recognize anything. It's completely dead. I can get the port to work again by powering down with the AC adapter unplugged and restarting.
I understand that the G5 will not charge over USB C, that's not a problem for me. But I have no way of turning off the USB PD on the monitor. Even if the port cannot charge off USB C, it should not die completely.
A couple things to note:
- I have updated all drivers and the bios to the latest drivers provided by Dell
- My wife has the exact same laptop and the same problem is occurring
Is there anything I can do to fix this issue? Or do I just have to wait for improved drivers/bios?

Hi, I have 2020 G5 5500 with RTX 2060. Perform all of the Dell and Windows updates. The G5 5500 has had several BIOS updates as the current config with 10th gen i7 seems rather new... I have successfully gotten Thunderbolt 3/USB-C port to work with three TB3 devices:
Thunderbolt 3 should work immediately and an icon appears letting you know its TB3 connection and not just USB 3.1. Performance is what you would expect, fast as lightning.
One thing to note about TB3 mini-docks (the ones with a short cable). You can not use a USB-C extension cable for thunderbolt. You will find some extension cables on amazon, etc.. marketed as "thunderbolt compatible" its just a flat-out lie. There exist no thunderbolt 3 extension cables for the mini-docks on the market. You have to deal with the incredibly short attached cable or upgrade to something like the TS3 Plus where the dock is powered and a single thunderbolt cable is used (no extension). The lack of extension cables was hard to get my head around but I'm 100% sure on this. Confirmed by CalDigit and Belkin support and they are two of the largest vendors of TB3 dock solutions.

I should mention that I have used several USB C and TB3 devices, and as you mention, they work fine. It seems to only be a combination of USB C Power Delivery and Video (either an HDMI display adapter or USB C monitor) that causes the problem.
Also, my monitor and display adapter are both USB C not Thunderbolt.
The monitor I'm using (LG 34WN80C-B) basically functions as a USB C docking station with video. It provides a 2 port USB hub, video, and 60W power. I've also tried with a USB C HDMI adapter.
The adapter has a port for pass-through power delivery. If I don't use the power delivery, the adapter does not cause a problem. If I plug in a power adapter to the HDMI adapter, I have the problem described.
I've also tried plugging in a USB C charger directly to the port to see if that alone causes the problem. It does not. Which leads me to believe it is something about the combination of power and video that is causing the issue.

At work I use the J5Create USB 3.1 dock https://en.j5create.com/products/jcd381 with my G5
This provides dual HDMI 1080p/60hz output (yes, it caps at 60hz, it's USB 3.1 so no surprise there). The G5 laptop screen is 144hz and have noticed some flickering during video playback, but it's rare and random. To get the J5Create USB 3.1 dock to work I do have to plug-in external power to the dock, it's advertised as being USB powered, which can work if you sacrifice another USB port. That's also the only way to get the USB pass-through port on the doc to work. My whole ambition was a single USB-C size cable solution so I just pass on using the USB ports on dock. Getting USB 3.1 docks to work has been more of a challenge in general than proper Thunderbolt 3 peripherals. TB3 devices "just work".
At home I use a CalDigit Thunderbolt 3 mini-dock. The TB3 dock is a different story. There is never any delay, just plug-it in and bam monitors on, zero artifacts. Can push dual external monitors 1080p at 120hz or dual 4k screens at 60hz all while power multiple USB ports, etc... The USB 3.1 and Thunderbolt 3 standards are much different. 40gb (TB3) vs 10gb (USB 3.1). So when you talk about TB3 devices, those device are designed to handle 40gb/s bandwidth which gets into cable length requirements, issues with extension cables, etc... If the device detects the cable isn't able to handle the bandwidth requirements of TB3 it just won't work.

Hi, I can confirm having the same issue with G5. I plug it in first time and it works, replug and it doesn't. Did you get this solved by any chance?
