Backlit keyboard not working after fresh OS install
Did a fresh install of Win8.1 on Inspiron 5558. (OS from MS, not Dell) I have installed software and drivers for the system from Dell support. There is no setting in BIOS to turn the backlight on/off. There are no Dell settings in the Windows Mobility Center. There is no Quickset program relevant to this system. Function keys do not turn it on. (F10 for this system) What else can I try?

Does the Fn key toggle work if you do it while outside the OS, such as in the BIOS Setup? I can’t think of a way that a fresh OS install would completely disable the keyboard backlight. There are certainly ways it could be controlled by an OS application that would work through a driver, but the backlight is technically a firmware-managed component, so it shouldn’t even be possible for the Fn key to be blocked by the OS.

I tried F10 toggling as the machine booted. No luck.
