Battery Not Detected or Charging and machine powers off randomly

I have an Inspiron 15R 5537. A month ago, I got an error message to say that my battery was failing and should be replaced so I duly got a new Dell battery and replaced it. To start with the battery was recognised and charged fine. Then after a few days I got the error message again so I tried the Dell community for inspiration. I tried the advice to remove battery and AC adapter and press the power button for 20 seconds. This worked for a few hours then the battery was again no longer detected and charging.

Then I tried uninstalling the battery driver. Again, this worked for the rest of the day - I thought I had cracked the problem but next day the issue started again. Initially the battery charged anyway but not it is not detected and is not charging. Now the computer has started to power off randomly (although much more often when it is trying heavy use such as my kids trying to play Roblox over the internet).

I have tried resetting the BIOS to "optimised settings" but that did nothing.

Help!!

Ps - not sure if it is related but Windows 10 is refusing to update - the update downloads but then I get an error message. I have tried various diagnostic tools and updates and cleanups but it is looking like I will have to do a 'clean' install of the updated Windows 10... but not sure if it's worth it if the machine won't recognise the battery. Seems this is a problem with some Dell laptops from the boards I have seen - if I can't fix it I shan't buy a Dell again.

Hi NZScot,

Thanks for posting.  Apologies that your system is not performing as expected.

Battery and charging issues can be caused by several factors; the ac adapter, the battery, the charging circuitry, or the motherboard itself.  Please perform a system diagnostics by pressing F12 at startup or by running Dell Support Assist.  Make a note of any error messages and post back.

Battery Not Detected usually means battery failing or has failed, and mostly likely needs to replace with a new one. However, just to be sure, run Dell off-line diagnostic to check the Battery health by following steps below.

1. Power on system, quickly start tapping F12 key continuously until you see Preparing One Time Boot Menu in the top right corner of screen.

2.In Dell Preboot menu, select Diagnostic. After quick tests finished, select Primary Battery and then click on Thorough Test Mode. Report back any error code.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I couldn't try any of your suggestions as someone unplugged the laptop while it was attempting to upgrade windows and the USB key my bitlocker recovery key is on is damaged.

Thanks anyway.
