Dell 5570 not charging

I have a Dell Inpirion 5570.

It shows adapter plugged in but not charging. The charge is now 0% so will only operate when the AC adapter is plugged in.

When plugged in the LED shows white for a second then turns off, no light. When I remove the adapter the laptop dies.

The battery shows excellent health in the bios but no charge. All connections are fine and in tact.

I can’t change or update BIOS, I’ve tried deleting the battery device software but no luck. I’ve unplugged the battery and reconnected, no luck.

live tried 4 chargers with none of then giving charge, all genuine dell.

ive recently changed the power connector lead as the centre pin broke, the new one worked great, now I get nothing.

How can I get charge into the laptop.

The AC adapter is powering the system, even when I disconnect the battery. Works with battery connected or disconnected.

On battery power, or no adapter, Once I remove the adapter the laptop powers off and dies immediately.  The battery either has no charge or it is not being used.

I get a message on start up that the adapter is not correct, despite it being the correct genuine Dell type, I have 2 identical chargers.

Could it be a fault in recognising the charger and then not allowing charge?

How can I test which part of that system may be at fault before I buy another laptop

I noticed my power connector port was damaged and I got inconsistent charging, having to be precise with positioning my charger.

I changed the port 3 weeks ago and it worked well for over 2 weeks. Then bang, it doesn’t show as charging, the power has drained, I can’t change BIOS, can’t move from the AC adapter.

The Dell troubleshooting guide is a step-by-step process of determing what is wrong.

Follow it.

Hi,

I've tried the windows trouble shooter.

The dell support assist diagnosis.

The dell online videos and trouble shooters.

The dell F12, built in diagnosis, getting an ePsa code of 4306.12

No luck at all.

4 genuine adapters and still get AC Adapter = unknown, so won't charge.

Battery at ZERO % so can't use it.

Why does dell build in a identity check and then disable charging if any error without the opportunity to over ride.

You can hide the message but not turn of the feature.

Laptop is 2 1/2 years old and now useless.

Looks like dell losses a long term customer and I move to another brand.

The troubleshooting guide would have told you that the battery is bad or the DC jack is bad or the motherboard is bad.  There are only so many possiblities.

It seems as if you have no patience to actually follow the steps.

The you for your advice, I am patient, have spent quite a few hours on this and can’t see how repeating your advice can direct me to find the answer?

I’ve tried the trouble shooters but I can’t see where it gives you the detail on what is wrong given my current situation.

the laptop showed it plugged in and not charging, the battery showed excellent health via windows and the bios. Unfortunately the battery charge went to zero.

initially I tried the fixes from other internet sources. Uninstalled the 2 battery devices/drivers in device management under battery, disconnected the battery and discharged the system, Reconnected the battery and restarted. Drivers loaded but same issue.

when I remove the battery, or disconnect the battery, the system dies. The ac adapter powers it fine but it can’t be used as if it disconnects it immediately shuts down.

with the battery connected, when the ac adapter is plugged in it gets an initial white led, lasting no more than 2 seconds then goes out. The information on charging does not give a good indication on what state the led should be in on zero charge, on power and possibly charging. It is not charging.

with the battery connected, when the ac adapter is plugged in the bios shows the ac adapter as UNKNOWN, the chargers are all dell branded and I have tried 4 so that should be ok.

running the ePsa diagnostics from F12 on boot up. All tests pass except the charging, the battery is ok. The main board passes all tests. The battery health is good.

I can’t update the bios as it need a minimum amount of battery power and on ac power, I have zero battery so can’t proceed.

l’ve removed any software, devices and updates down in the days prior to losing charging. I’ve rolled back the system to an earlier state. Software should not be an issue, especially as the bios is showing the adapter as unknown.

I somehow need to disable the dell system for identifying the charger, allowing it to charge, but I can’t see any information on how that can be done.

What am I missing from all the trouble shooter that can identify the issue so I can fix this?

it was working fine then stopped charging. Battery seems good, chargers should be good as I’ve tried 4 and all provide ac power, main board passes dell diagnostics so I presume ok. The ac power port is providing power to the main board.

I hate dell laptops - this is ridicules.

The Dell charger has a chip which identifies it as Dell, this need to make contact with the laptop to allow the charging circuit to work. This works in tandem with the AC power which has a separate circuit and functions fine, power is getting to the laptop and powering it for normal use, when attached to the charger.

The 5570 is taking power from the charger but not charging.

The battery is fine, showing excellent health, and I have charged the battery by attaching it in another Dell laptop.

The chargers are fine, I have 4 and all work on another Dell laptop. I've checked the voltages and all fine.

I tried to change the Dell power port, I now have 3 leads from 3 different suppliers, all allow power to pass through but still no charge,

I've ran all the available diagnostics, no luck - mainboard/motherboard passes no issue.

I've downgraded the BIOS, no luck.

I've removed all the latest drivers, no luck.

I've removed the windows battery power management device, no luck.

I've re-installed them all and updated to latest versions, no luck.

I've tried electrical contact spray, no luck.

I've air dusted every inch of the mainboard/motherboard and every connection.

I've tried plugging in very quickly, and very slowly, no luck.

I've tried a hard reset, I've tried resetting BIOS to factory default and I've tried every item unplugged, no luck.

Have I missed anything?

Why does Dell put in a protection system that prohibits charging but allows power!!

The reason is to protect the battery from a faulty charger, among others.

If you've already tried multiple adapters and jacks, there's just one other possibility:  the charge circuit on the mainboard is bad.  For that, the mainboard needs to be replaced.

Thank you for your advice.

I agree the only option is the mainboard/motherboard but I am very surprised it passes the Dell diagnostics tests.

If it is that item the laptop is not worth fixing and now scrap !!!

It is just over 2 years old, out of warranty with no service agreement. The cost of the item outways the value of the machine, not cost effective to repair !!!

What would be good is an option to remove or disable that protection. It must be under bios control so Dell (or somebody) should be able to supply an unrestricted version.

It seems this feature is affecting a lot of Dell laptops.

If the problem were with the adapter or jack, then yes - the system would charge if there were an option to disable the logic circuit.

In this case, no - a blown MOSFET on the mainboard that takes out the power circuit isn't a logic circuit fault; it's a hard fault that prevents charging regardless of any setting to disable the logic circuit.  If the electrons aren't reaching the battery, it will not charge.

The converse of this is found in other systems, where though there is no warning if a non-OEM adapter is used, doing so will immediately blow up the charge circuit in many cases. This is why Macbook users are dependent on Apple power adapters. There's no warning if you plug in a third-party adapter (other than that you've just fried a $1000+ logic board in the process).

No, the software can't command hardware if it has a failsafe like other devices,  unless you have knowledge of how to help fix this, when all the suggested steps have already been attempted.

I have this same issue with two Inspiron 5570 laptops. One suddenly doesn't recognise its original Dell charger it came with nor 3 other genuine replacements, however the other one does. Sometimes! It intermittently will not charge.

After running all the tests and checks under the sun as you have too, the conclusion is the motherboard needs replacing. After so many other issues with both these laptops - including both having hard drive failures early on but just out of warranty - I am in the market for two new laptops. Neither will be a Dell machine

No, no practical solution for a long term fix. Tried all the online tip and tricks, followed all the YouTube video, bought new chargers and new power leads. Once it’s gone it really needs a professional fix with a new motherboard. If you don’t have a warranty that’s not cost effective. The laptop is now no longer portable and permanently mains powered.
