Dell Inspiron 5379 - I2C Hid Device - Code 10
HI,
I have one of these laptops (2-in-1 13") originally running Windows 10 Home.
When I got it, I noticed that in Device Manager, the "I2C Hid Device" has a Code 10 error and won't start:
This device cannot start. (Code 10)
A request for the HID descriptor failed.
I have tried recovering using the recovery image and it still has the same error.
I also installed Windows 10 Pro and all the drivers from Dell support and it has the same error.
So I was wondering if this is normal for this Dell model? Does anyone else who has this (2-in-1 13") see this same error in Device Manager?
Thanks,
Jim

Hi,
Even if no one has a SOLUTION to this problem, but has this same laptop, can you check Device Manager and see if that "I2C HID Device" is starting? Or failing to start?
I just sent several hours with Dell Support chat today. They tried multiple different things, but basically got nowhere with this problem.

I'm having the same problem, sometimes when I uninstall it and then reboot it will reinstall and work for a week or so. Surprising they don't have a fix for this a year later...

I've also been having this problem on and off with my 5379. Sometimes the touchpad works correctly, and sometimes it doesn't - essentially, it has no multi-touch functionality. I was also seeing the Code 10 error in Device Manager for Human Interface Devices > I2C HID Device.
I used the online tool to update drivers, but this did not help.
I posted a message on this board, and someone suggested I update the Intel I/O driver. I did this and it fixed the issue - at least, I've rebooted a couple of times now, and it still works.
I did this:
In Device Manager, open System Devices > Intel Serial IO I2C Host Controller. Go to the Driver tab; the driver was dated sometime in 2017. I clicked the Update Driver button and selected Search automatically for updated driver software. It updated the driver to version 30.100,1816.3, dated 4/19/2018. I then restarted the computer, and the touchpad worked again. (The Human Interface Devices > I2C HID Device node no longer shows an error.)
Like I said, I've rebooted the computer a few times now and it's still working. Note that when it is working, when you go to Windows Settings > Devices > Touchpad, It says Your PC has a precision touchpad at the top, and there is a long list of touchpad settings. When the touchpad is not working correctly, this message is not at the top, and the only setting displayed is Touchpad sensitivity.
I hope this helps.

Alas, this fix worked for a little while, but was not permanent. Occasionally my touchpad works correctly, but mostly it does not. I'm at a loss. I may need to open the laptop up and check the touchpad connection.

Eu tive o mesmo problema com a atualização para o Windows 10.
Tentei de tudo: desinstalar drivers, formatar, instalar outros drivers, etc.
O que resolveu foi isso:
