Dell Inspiron 5458 enable 2nd RAM slot

Inspiron 5458

Inspiron 5458

I currently purchased two 8GB RAM as replacement for the 4GB RAM that came with my laptop. Since computer applications now demand high RAM usage, I decided to upgrade to the max RAM capacity of 16GB. The upgrade was somehow successful, but it only upgraded to 8GB instead of 16. When checked in BIOS, it says that the 2nd DIMM slot is empty. In Task Manager, it also says under Performance > Memory that I have 1 of 2 slots used. I've read that I need to go to Advanced BIOS setup, but I could not find a way to do it. Some said it was locked by the manufacturer to prevent users from accidental damage. Anyone here know how to activate the 2nd RAM/DIMM slot of my laptop? TIA!

Memory slots are not hardware or BIOS disabled.   If its not working, either the slot is physically bad, Memory not installed correctly or defective memory.

Reinstall the memory module for the one not working.  If that doesn't work, swap the two memory modules.  If it still does not work, the slot is likely defective.  If you still have a Dell warranty or extended warranty contact Dell support.
