Dell Inspiron 5570 Dual Monitor USB-C issue

Hi!

I have the Inspiron 5570. I connected a UBS-C HDMI adapter. But in Windows 10, it only works 800x600 60Hz. If I try to set a higher resolution, the monitor disconnect and connect over and over, and no image on the screen.

The strange thing is that in Ubuntu works fine, and 1920x1080 60Hz. It looks like it's a Windows 10 issue, not hardware issue.

Did anyone have this issue before?

@grjasis  Ok, in that case the only thing I can think of suggesting would be making sure you're running the latest BIOS for your system.  Normally if this was a BIOS problem I would expect that this problem would occur on both OSes, but since you've already updated drivers, that's the only other component I can think of that might be the source of an issue, because typically this setup just requires properly operating firmware and appropriate GPU drivers.

Yes, I updated the BIOS last week and still the same issue.

This may be due to a speed problem on the usb-c port? Because by increasing the screen resolution, this crashes, as if it could not send more data.

@grjasis  I don't think it's a speed issue.  Video traffic actually doesn't use USB data.  When USB-C ports support video output, it's because there's an output directly from the GPU wired to the port, so from the system's perspective, USB-C video output is just another DisplayPort output from the GPU.  The reason you see a "USB-C Video Cable" device in Device Manager is because video output support over USB-C is optional, and USB-C devices that rely on optional functionality sometimes include a "Billboard device" that interfaces with the system over USB 2.0 so that if you connect this type of adapter to a system that doesn't support video output, the device will be able to use its billboard device to send an error to the system so that it can display a message to the user basically saying, "Your system doesn't support the functionality required to use the device you've plugged in."  But that means that the only speed involved here is the bandwidth of the DisplayPort interface from the GPU to the USB-C port, but USB-C supports at least DisplayPort 1.2, which can handle 4K 60 Hz, i.e. 4x more than 1080p.  So I wouldn't expect that to be an issue.

At this point if your firmware and drivers are all current, my only suggestion would be to try a different adapter.  I realize that shouldn't matter especially given that it works on that exact system when running Linux, but I don't know of anything within Windows that you can tweak to make this work.  As long as you have the necessary GPU drivers installed, which you do, it should work out of the box.

My monitor has only VGA and HDMI input.
I tested with two different adapters, and I had the same result.

I remember when I bought the adapter, when I connected the display it flashed and then showed the BSD with VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE error. I updated the Intel Graphics drivers, and then it didn't happen again. I'm not sure if that will be a clue.

@grjasis  The drivers all look fine, so I'm surprised that it works properly in Ubuntu but not Windows.  I've seen cases where certain USB-C to HDMI adapters don't work at all on some laptops even though they work on other laptops and other brands of USB-C to HDMI adapters work on both laptops, but I've never seen this.  All I can suggest is trying a different USB-C to HDMI adapter in case this is a strange issue sort of like that.  It SHOULDN'T matter because the adapter itself doesn't require any special drivers, and it looks like your graphics drivers are all fine, but the tech world is full of problems that shouldn't exist but do.  Also, if the display you're using has a DisplayPort input, consider a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter/cable instead.  The reason is that USB-C uses DisplayPort for video output anyway, so USB-C to HDMI adapters have to incorporate an active signal converter chip to switch that signal to HDMI, which is additional cost and complexity.
