Dell Inspiron 5584 Upgrade

I have my Laptop DELL 5584, however since I used a lot of programs for editing and also some for my school such as Matlab, Labview and other, I'm asking what would be the best option to upgrade on my laptop, If the RAM to 16GB or the memory, also what items are compatible with this laptop
