Dell InsydeH20 BIOS freezes when I try to Save changes and Exit
Hello,
I have a Dell Inspiron 7520 (i7 processor) laptop. It is no longer under warranty. I recently updated the BIOS to A13 and replaced the DVD drive with a caddy for a second hard drive.
I can boot into the OS on this drive by tapping F12 on boot up and changing the boot order to the DVD drive.
However I cannot make that permanent. There is another BIOS menu where you can change the boot order and then Save and Exit so it will always boot from the DVD drive Sata connector. However when I try to do that the BIOS screen freezes and I have to force a reboot by powering off and on again. When it comes back it boots as usual into the Hard Drive Sata connector.
- The "HardDrive" is an SSD and the "DVD drive" is a HDD.
- I tried resetting the BIOS settings to defaults and when I did that the only boot options were Harddrive, Network and Network so I did not try to save that change.
- Both SSD and HDD have Win 10 installed with Legacy BIOS/MBR and not GPT/EFI.
- When I look in the BIOS it says the CMOS battery is working normally.
- I can boot from the drive in the DVD drive bay but cannot make it default to that drive at every boot.
Any ideas?

Thank you but as I mentioned in my question my laptop is long since out of warranty so I know there is no chance I will get any official help. I am just hoping someone on here can advise me about this BIOS freezing situation.

I also tried replacing the CMOS battery and it didn't make any difference. The BIOS screen freezes when I make a change and try to save that change.
Anybody got any ideas what I can do to fix this problem?

Probably because you can't boot from the hard drive in the DVD slot.
There are discussions elsewhere of people trying to do that.

Well I did mention that I AM able to boot an OS on the hard drive that is in the DVD bay caddy.. it's just that I have to hit F12 after a reboot to get in to the one time boot menu and select the DVD drive from there at every single reboot. I am not able to make the boot order permanently boot from the drive connected to the DVD drive SATA port.
I'm just pointing out that there is a subtle difference in what you are saying and what is actually possible.
Do you know the exact reason why my dell laptop cannot be made to boot, by default, an OS on a drive connected from the DVD drive bay? If so please let me know. Thank you.
