Dell audio missing and headset recognized as only headphones

I have a new headset and a relatively new inspiron 3583 with a headset combo jack, but it only recognizes it as headphones. I looked up many different solutions to this and all of them need dell audio manager, which I can find no where on my computer, not in the ^ in the taskbar, or control panel. I tried reinstalling Realtek audio driver multiple times and no change. what do I do???

Along with the Dell supplied Realtek audio driver (only use Dell supplied driver) you also need Waves MaxxAudio app for proper jack detection.

Here is the link to the Dell downloads to download and install MaxxAudio (and if you don't have the Dell Realtek driver, download and install that first).

Cade Hymas,

Click on Waves on the program menu. Once opened click advanced. You should see a place to add a checkmark in the box to show popup when the device is connected.

Cade Hymas,

Please follow the below steps and check if it helps.

  1. Press Windows + R, type control panel and then hit Enter, select Hardware and Sound.
  2. Scroll down and select Realtek HD Audio Manager.
  3. Click the folder icon just above and to the right of where it says analog back panel and just below Device Advanced settings.
  4. Uncheck/Check to Enable auto popup dialog when device has been plugged in.
  5. Click OK twice.
  6. Now, restart the computer and check the issue.

I have the waves installed, but there’s no pop up or notification that asks me whether I’m using a headset or headphones.

Ok I will try that when I can

I figured it out there was an output drop down menu that had headphones or headset and I switched it to headset. Thanks so much!

Cade Hymas,

Uncheck and recheck the box and reboot the computer. If that does not work uninstall and reinstall the audio drivers.

Instead of Waves MaxxAudio you may also install Dell Optimizer that has audio popup each time you connect 3.5 jack where you can select Headphones or Headset.
