Dell inspiron power button stuck

My power button is stuck in the unpressed mode. How can I fix this as it's not allowing my laptop to power on!

It's a Dell Inspiron 15 5000 series laptop.

Hi PowerButton121,

Thanks for posting.  Apologies that your system is not performing as expected.

First, to locate a manual we would need to know the exact model number of your computer, as there are several models in the 5000 series.

Second, might need to determine if it's something physical holding the button in.  For example, dirt, lint, piece of food, etc.  You can use a can of compressed air to try and blow it out from the top of the palm rest.

If that's not the issue, then Third, using the manual, open the case and look under the palm rest, inspect the power button and if the switch has failed, it would need to be replaced.

Here is a short video, not from Dell, but does illustrate the procedure:

Robert,

Thanks for the response. I followed the video and there doesn't seem to be anything blocking my palmrest. The model is a 5558.

Are there any alternative scenarios regarding what happened to to the power button? Is there a specific part I can replace?

Thanks

Had the same issue with my son's Inspiron  I used some contact cleaner to squirt into the seam around the button head and then used canned air to dry it out.  In between blasts of air, wiggled the button gently with a screwdriver tip and it came back to life.  The contact cleaner is available on the web or at an electronics parts store.  The laptop is 3 years old so wasn't really that interested in having the button replaced, its a 15 dollar part and and probably 100-150 labor for a tech to tear it apart and replace.  New units in the same line are in the 600-700 dollar range.  Didn't pay much attention when he got it from a grandparent but impressed with it now.  Nice laptop.  Hopefully, it will out last my sons college, one more year to go.  Two prior kids, laptops (HP and Apple) barely made it through 4 years, this one I think will make it through with some life left in it.
