First boot up out of the box

Been a while since I had a new Windows machine and already starting to think I made a mistake switching away from Apple.

I have a new Dell G5 gaming laptop 15inch, just taken it out the box and trying to start it for the first time. I’ve set up the language, keyboard and WiFi ok but now seem to have hit a wall. It’s been stuck on a page for about an hour now with a message ‘Now we have some important setup to do’. I have a spinning wheel but no other indication that it’s doing anything. Is this normal for a first power up? Don’t want to force a restart in case I’m interrupting something.

Thanks

Mark

It takes 3 hours (180 min) on 10 Mbps connection or around 30 minutes on 100 Mbps internet connection for this message to disappear. => ‘Now we have some important setup to do’.

You can choose not to put wifi password on start-up, it will make things faster but then you have to manually update windows and all the drivers. (like BIOS)

When I do a clean installation of Windows, I do not set up the wifi until later.

Just got my XPS today and have run into the same problem.  First it happened after the first sentence uttered by Cortana.  It just froze in mid sentence so I had to shut it down and start over.  Then everything seemed ok until after I entered my wifi password and it froze again at “Now we have some important set up to do”.   This is by far the worst start I have had from the countless computers I have set up.  I will wait at least 3 hours to see if I can get passed this roadblock and if not shut down again and start over.

@RLSteeves

That is an ignorant statement.

All PC makers put an image on the hard drive.

Microsoft has a monthly update to Windows 10 every month! The one I installed last night was 460 MB in size.

Microsoft has a major Windows 10 update every 6 months!

This is absolute BS.   Oh gee i have a new $1400 computer andi get to stare at blue screen saying its updating.  How about when they arrive new it has updates done and all you need is personal setup items.  Very disappointed in lack any documentation even warning of this was gonna be happening.  Would not have purchased knowing it was half built.

It would have been helpful if the screen message included "This may take between 30 minutes and 5 hours". I have the Dell G3 and I have already been waiting 90 minutes at 150 Mbps.

Can confirmed, just opened after receiving my package. Little wheel keeps spinning. I was worried it was because it might have been damaged via transit a la attached photos

New G5 here and I ran into the same issue. Thought it was frozen so I restarted, and now it's stuck at "Hi there! I'm Cortana, and I'm here to help.". If I knew it was downloading and installing updates I would have left it, now I'm worried it's stuffed and can't get to the next step. What do I do?

Hello,

same problem here. I called dell and talked to a manager, manager said it could take up to 5 hours, and if I want it quicker, I can shut down then restart the computer and press f12 a few times. I was going through the same process again from choose region. I forget to turn off wifi as I was instructed. When it comes to that screen "we have some important update...", it just skipped to the next screen after a few secs ( I don't know why). Then everything went smoothly. when it is all done, I just went to check for updates and update from there. It was done pretty quickly. As someone had left it overnight for setting up, I just wonder what I could miss here? not sure, let us see!

I had the same problem, you just have to wait a couple of hours. In my case, I waited 2 hours, with an internet speed of 6mb. My notebook model is Dell G5.

Same here with my G3.

Closed the lid after a couple of minutes and opened it again.

Then it was done in no time...

After that updated everything in windows and dell updater.

Same exact prob. Been spinning an hour or so. I'll leave it overnight at this rate.  Disappointed there's not even a "This may take a while" message that's displayed. But looking forward to this new machine very much for lightroom
