G15 5510 Running Very Hot

Question

I recently received a brand new G15 5510 with an Intel Core i5 10200h, and GTX 1650 Ti. Right away I have noticed that the CPU would reach 97c during games, and the fans would go full blast sounding like jet engines. I made sure to have adequate space below the laptop for the airflow, but it is still the same thing. I also made sure to have the latest updates installed, and the newest bios is present. It hasn't shut off on me due to temperature, but it is hitting serious thermal throttling. Disabling Intel Turbo Boost helps to run it between 50 to 70c, but with it enabled it is 70 to max of 97c. Setting Thermals to "Cool" in power management helps by some degrees, but I don't think that should be normal temperatures even for games.

The GPU is perfectly fine, never gets above 70c when gaming, and stays at low to mid 50s when just browsing web.

I had a tech replace the two fans and the motherboard, install latest bios, and applied better thermal paste that I had a tube of from my gaming desktops (Thermal Grizzly: Kryonaut), which helped lower the peak temperatures under load to low 90s. I would recommend turning off Intel Turbo Boost in the bios, I just think it is boosting the CPU too high for the cooling on the laptop. I wish someone from either Intel or Dell would look into releasing a patch to maybe lower down the boost clock somewhat to make thermals better. Other than that the laptop is great value for the price in my opinion, just wish it came with dual sticks of RAM for dual channel.

Also free up the system resources by uninstall any of the pre-installed programs except for maybe Dell Power Mode. Then set the power mode to either Cool or Optimized.

I did all of those things in combination and the laptop is very quiet and relatively cool when gaming on the go.

Any update on the heating issue ?

I bought the same laptop (G15 5510 i5 gtx1650) and I am facing this overheating issue .

While playing games on battery , the performance does not vary much and the temps stay below 65 C . But while charging it goes till 95C.

Hey Guys, Its been 2 years almost 3 since ive been facing this issue, please update if anyone has a solution other than if it works by replacing the thermal paste or the motherboard as those are pretty expensive, Ive underclocked to 3.2 GHz but still remains 70 C even on idle.

The boost clock is very high, what I did to switch boost on/off without going to BIOS (this solution was used on old systems that didn't have TurboBoost switch in the BIOS menu) was to keep the boost on but from windows Registry turn the ModernStandby off, this way the Windows power management advanced options get unlocked so we can set the max percentage of CPU clock from there, if we set it to 99% TurboBoost will be off. If we use VirtualMachinePlatform(for example for Docker) then AWCC will have no control over TurboBoost performance.

I have a G5 5590 i7 9750h, it's great but I had similar issues of reaching 100C, after cleaning the radiator coils and replacing thermal paste with a 14w/mk and using a good coolpad I could reach 95C while TurboBoosting (overclocking).

We should not use Cool Thermal management plan, it brings down GPU performance too so with ModernStandby off we set Thermal plan to Balance or even Ultra Performance to have maximum GPU performance and limited CPU performance. I can play RDR2 with ULTRA graphics with 40~50fps(based on GameBar which I think is not accurate and shows lower FPS) and CPU goes as high as 70C and GPU 75C.

But I had microstuttering in different games and that temp was still high, many people have microstuttering issue with RDR2 even on high-end PCs with RTX4070 while their FPS are so high. That's because of uncapped FPS limitation, without capped FPS processor's clock and temperature jump suddenly high which cooling fan can't react this fast so the processor gets throttled and we experience microstuttering with high FPS. Capping FPS from "NVidia control panel" (some games don't have it in settings) made my system drastically cool and increased my FPS to a very high stable level.

Same rule goes for newer games like SOTF.
