G15 5511 2nd M.2 Drive Issues

I have got a Dell G15 5511 (Intel i7 1180h, geforce 3060 rtx, 16gb ddr4 memory, etc) that I really enjoy using but doesn’t seem to like my second m.2 drive.

Laptop came with only one drive - 512mb PCIe Gen3 NVMe.  I installed in the empty slot a 1TB Gen4 NVMe - WD SN850.  I realized I was in getting gen 3 speeds with the gen4 drive in that slot so I switched slots.  The gen3 drive is in the second slot and the gen4 drive is in the primary slot.  When the gen4 drive displays it shows it as gen4 speeds per crystal mark, however the drive disappears in Windows from time to time.

I read this language in the G15 5511 Setup and Specifications - “NOTE: If you have ordered only one solid-state drive, it can be upgraded to the solid-state drive of the same form factor but an additional solid-state drive is not supported. If you have ordered two solid-state drives, they can be upgraded to the solid-state drives of the same form factor respectively.”

Does this mean I can only use one slot in my laptop? That would be very frustrating.  Please let me know if you have any ideas.  I’ve tried updating the chipset and firmware for both the bios and the drive.  Drive is detected consistently in the bios without fail.

Thanks.

I just received my 5511 today. I'm going to get the Samsung 980 Pro 1TB drive see if I get PCIe 4 speeds. Will move existing drive to second slot. Will buy mounting hardware on ebay. Hopefully all goes according to plan.

I have the Crusial/Micron P5 Plus 2TB and  update the bios to 1.81,but still can not work .error.jpg

About the error:

When I testing the P5 PLUS with gen 4 slot by AS SSD benchmark, it can not finish the test and speed is abnormal, error and blue screen soon afterwards. The blue screen can not colleting error data(always 0% in 5 minutes)

Restart the laptop I try was failed. But I change to GEN 3 SLOT it can run again without any error.

Finally the laptop is working properly so far.

MY motherboard number is OYC2KJ,could you showo me yours?

Same here, with a WD SN 850 SSD. Mainboard Model: 0YCWHG

As already written, actually I do not want to answer here any more, but I do it again because I have received some private inquiries.

Base Board Information
Manufacturer: Dell Inc.
Product Name: 0YCWHG
Version: A01

I have now installed the Micron NVMe described by me twice and both run simultaneously, but the second NVMe port is slower and comes only to Gen 3 speed.

Furthermore, I have now installed 2 32GB RAM modules from the same manufacturer, which also run without problems.

The following NVMe is installed by Dell itself and can therefore probably also be called compatible.

Samsung PM9A1 PCIe Gen4 NVMe 2TB

Hi,

I have been building computers of all types for almost 25 years. I just got this G15 5511 and had already ordered a 980 to replace the WD 2230.

To my suprise I noticed that the drive speeds fluctuate a lot. At first boot 250 Mbs read and write.

The drive eventually went up to 6500Mbs read and 5500Mbs write but only for a short period. If I use this drive in slot 2 like others mentioned it will run at Gen 3 speeds.

Problem is I ordered this specific board because it had Gen 4 Pcie so I could run a 980 Pro. I can see that it can run the drive but this board still needs either a bios of firmware update.

I don't want to call support and have to through an hour long troubleshooting script with a 3rd level support tech that has no idea what the issue is.

I hope that @Dell support is looking at this thread and will acknowledge that there is an issue.

Also, I wish that Dell would not interfere with a windows install and not remove the power settings from the control panel. This is really irritating

Hi,

Just to give you an idea how much this drive goes all over the place with this G15 5511, here are some pics. Most are just Crystal disk tests no running apps in background.

Now look at theses from this morning!!

Ten minutes after reboot. Reminder, no running apps

Notice that the read is slower than the write.

This is not acceptable at all!! This controller needs either another bios or firmware update.

I was on a chat with support about this and it eventually got to the point where they said that the Samsung drive I am using was a third party piece of hardware and was not supported. But I could pay Dell for additional support for third party hardware. No thanks Dell. So you are correct, a call would just be a waste of time.

Exactly this. I completely agree and hope Dell can fix this issue with a firmware update, hopefully sooner rather than later.

This is totally outrageous. The only difference between a 2230 and a 2280 is size.

Physical size and connectors

Right now, all M.2 drives that are intended for use in PCs are 22mm wide, but they come in a variety of lengths.

To make it easier to tell which drives can be mounted on a motherboard or PCI-E card, the width and height of both the drive and slot is usually expressed in a single number that combines the two dimensions.

For example, a drive that is 22mm wide and 80mm long would be listed as being a 2280 (22mm x 80mm). Common lengths for M.2 drives and mounting right now are 30mm (2230), 42mm (2242), 60mm (2260), 80mm (2280), and 110mm (22110).

In addition, there are two types of sockets for M.2: one with a "B key" and one with a "M key".

M.2 A or B.jpg

The G15 5511 can either fit a smaller 2230 or a larger 2280 NO DIFFERENCE AT ALL WITH SPECS AND PERFORMANCE.

Dell is abusing it's warranty limits and is not being honest with customers. The material added affects in no way the health or performance of the machine.

a lot of users makes changes to their computers to get the best bang for the least amount of spending. The fact that we decided to use Dell is because we had confidence in the system.

By acting this way, Dell is not honoring their warranty and is not supporting their customers!

Just fix the controller and leave the poor gauged customer alone!!

True. But this is an issue with how Dell has implemented the M.2 Gen4 standard. It appears to be a Dell issue as drives from Western Digital and Samsung are not working properly with the 5511. I've said it before in this thread, these are industry standard parts that should be expected to work in a computer that claims to support that standard. The issue is with how Dell has poorly implemented it.

You would think that they would have made it work properly given the type of user these computers are targeted at. We are power users and expect the most from our systems when we push them hard. I'm in the video industry and need as fast and as reliable of a computer I can get. I'm sure the gamers out there feel the same way.

Ironically, last evening the Dell Social Media Support account reached out to me via a PM on this forum. They asked for the Service Tag from my 5511. I provided it and a few hours later received a PM with the same boiler plate response I got from the chat support - that I was using third party hardware and it was not supported.

While I appreciate them reaching out, the lack of taking this issue to the higher support tiers or engineers that could actually do something to fix the issue is frustrating. The computer claims to support the Gen4 standard. The third party parts are using this standard. Again, clearly it is an issue with Dell.

Thanks for all the informations you guys are providing. If you want to be reassured... Get the most decent Gen3 nvme ssd. For gaming, what matters is the Random Read in most cases. Gen4 tends to overheat and needs a good heatsink. I will watch this topic for the next months.

I'm completely with all of you. I bought this system to pair with a 980 Pro or SN850, which I thought was a no brainer, only find this when I noticed that my drive was performing horribly in slot 2.  Not only that but I'm getting worse results than I do from my OLD i7 4790K with a PCIe card running a 970 EVO Plus.

I'll swap the drives tomorrow but completely disappointed in Dell. First and last, what's the point in buying a high-end laptop that doesn't work with "3rd Party" high end products?  Will also be considering a return and go with a company that actually supports high end hardware.
