How to test for hardware problem with a Nvidia Geforce GTX960M on Inspiron 7559 - error 43
I'd like to test whether the inbuilt GPU on my Dell laptop has developed a hardware fault. Can anyone suggest a method or diagnostic tool that might do this? In particular is it possible to tell from the UEFI/BIOS menu whether the GPU is present (BIOS version 1.3.1)?
In my view of the UEFI menu I see no option to select video card - neither the NVidia Geforce nor the Intel 530 integrated graphics card
Currently Windows 10 operates well on the machine with the integrated GPU enabled and the Nvidia driver disabled
Windows10 is up to date and I have installed the full set of drivers from the list Dell recommends for my laptop. The Nvidia driver installs correctly but is stopped during boot-up with error code 43. There is a lot of online advice about this error. To date I have:
- confirmed that none of the Windows system files are corrupted
- deleted the Nvidia driver in safe mode using Device Driver Uninstall and re-installed it
- tried older and more recent Nvidia drivers
- checked Lucid Virtu is not installed
- checked bootlog, which show the following problem:
C:\Windows\ntbtlog.txt shows:
Line 74: BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\dxgkrnl.sys
Line 76: BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\dxgkrnl.sys
Line 105: BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\dxgkrnl.sys
Line 139: BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\CAD.sys
Line 163: BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\dxgkrnl.sys
Line 165: BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\dxgkrnl.sys
Line 200: BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\NDProxy.sys
Line 202: BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\NDProxy.sys
Line 204: BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\NDProxy.sys
Line 206: BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\NDProxy.sys
Line 209: BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\system32\drivers\wd\WdFilter.sys
I decided that the problem with dxgkrnl is more likely to be a symptom rather than root cause
Any ideas / thoughts would be much appreciated!
Rob

There's no firmware control over the nVidia GPU -- the Intel GPU is primary and will always show as such. The nVidia GPU is a software-controlled co-processor.
Try completely removing all GPU drivers. Then reboot and install the Intel GPU driver (from Dell, not Intel). Then reboot an install the nVidia GPU driver (again, from Dell - not nVidia).

Thankyou for the good advice. I downloaded the drivers from the Dell site, removed the old drivers and reinstalled the new drivers in safe mode. I installed the Intel first and then the Nvidia second.
Unfortunately it has not changed the problem, I still get error 43
Drivers:
Intel-HD-Graphics-Driver_GR6GW_WIN_26.20.100.6859_A15
nVIDIA-Geforce-830M-930M-GTX850M-GTX950M-GTX960M_68F68_WIN_23.21.13.9125_A08
On the first install (with neither display driver installed) I checked the bootlog and noted the same problems - curious
Line 74: BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\dxgkrnl.sys
Line 76: BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\dxgkrnl.sys
Line 105: BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\dxgkrnl.sys
Line 140: BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\CAD.sys
Line 164: BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\dxgkrnl.sys
Line 166: BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\dxgkrnl.sys
Line 201: BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\NDProxy.sys
Line 203: BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\NDProxy.sys
Line 205: BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\NDProxy.sys
Line 207: BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\NDProxy.sys
Line 210: BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\system32\drivers\wd\WdFilter.sys
Useful to know that the NVidia co-processor is sitting on the motherboard - I imagined a separate card / module. How easy is it to replace it?
Many thanks again for the help - any other ideas?

No - do a hardware scan, not a chkdsk.
Test both drives (particularly if you have programs loading from both).

The nVidia GPU cannot be replaced if it fails -- if that has happened, the system board must be replaced.
Before proceeding, run an extended diagnostic on the hard drive (or SSD, whichever you have) -- F12 at powerup. Let the quick tests run, and then to the extended drive test (if this is a spinning hard drive, note that the tests will take several hours).

7 Gold,
I'll give it a go!
Were you thinking of a chkdsk scan?
I have two drives. I assume I should only test the drive on which windows is installed (SSD). True?
Wouldn't a SSD/HD error show itself in other ways as well?
Shame the GPU can't be replaced - replacement of the whole system board sounds expensive
Thanks again

Big thanks for all the help. Unfortunately the problem still remains
I used the Dell diagnostic (F12 at startup)
The computer passed all the validation tests - unfortunately no pointers to the problem from the hardware scan The scan does not test the GPUs
Cheers
