Inspirion 5547 touch screen and USB mouse stopped working

I have seen other posts about this happening to people around the 20th of February 2018. Both touchscreen and/or USB mouse stopped working. None had any definitive answer other than reloading Windows (bet it happens again after it updates again) or going back to a restore point. Yes, I tried all the suggestions. For example, in device manager right click on "HID-compliant touch screen" blah blah blah. Well, it wasn't there to right click on. It was gone, as were many other drivers, apparently including the USB mouse one. Scan for hardware changes, returned nothing. Windows troubleshooting, returned an error that it couldn't troubleshoot because of some page file. Ran Malwarebytes and made sure my anti-virus definitions were all up to date. Could not find the drivers to load on either Dell or Microsoft sites.

My question is where can I find the correct drivers when this happens again? I really shouldn't have to go through hours of investigating because an update becomes corrupted, nor should I get an update without being notified when I have that option checked. Trouble shooting is a bit time consuming without a mouse or touchscreen.

I suspect the USB mouse is causing the touch screen problem. The USB mouse's manufacture is from Dell? You updated the latest USB mouse firmware from Dell or from it's manufacture?

Do you ever clean the LCD (touchscreen) screen? If no, check out the steps in the link below

Also, you ever calibrate the touch screen. If no, follow the steps below

I have same problem touchscreen and usb mouse not working (Inspiron 7000). Drivers are missing it says in device manager. Dell website doesn’t have mouse or touchscreen drivers to download and scans using their system scan software doesn’t show up any problems. Any advice on how to fix appreciated.

Hi DiaDuit

Power off the system. Remove all peripherals, AC adapter, cable for the mouse and wait about 5 minutes. Replace adapter, cable for the mouse, power on system. Hopefully touch screen and mouse are working again.

If the touch screen and mouse still doesn't work:

Type Troubleshoot onto the [Cortana] search box, select / run the Device & Hardware troubleshooter. Please run Windows Update and " Power " troubleshooters as well.

Please use the System Restore tool on the computer to go back to an earlier time before the touch screen and mouse stop working. Type Create A Restore Point onto [Cortana] search box, select System Restore.

Same issue on my husbands Insp 5559.  Touch screen stopped working.  Nothing showing in HID except HID Touch Pad and Vendor defined..... also says G2TSP driver missing.... I have the same laptop and show 10 items in my device manager/HID compliant file.  He doesn't use the touch screen option often, so not sure how long ago it quit working.

Hi POBarbara

Please select Detect Drivers in the link below. The dell utility will search drivers (BIOS, Chipset and,Video) and firmware for the system.

Support for Inspiron 5547 | Drivers & downloads | Dell US

After installing Dell drivers, install Microsoft (touch screen) drivers through windows updates:

Type Settings onto the [Cortana] search box, click Update & Security, and select Check For Updates. The latest should be the Fall Creator update, see link below.

Microsoft Windows Update

Hi - I had the same problem with an Inspiron 7378 2-in-1. Finally found this Microsoft article; seems to be a known issue with the February 13, 2018 update.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4091240/usb-devices-may-stop-working-after-installing-the-february-13-2018-upd

I followed instructions to uninstall the update (via command prompt) and my touch screen and mouse are back!

Hope this works for you. The usual troubleshooting doesn't work; it's crazy-making!
