Inspiron 15 5577 audio driver issue
I had no problems with this until today. For some reason when I opened my laptop today, my audio was not working. Over my audio icon in the taskbar there is a red cross and if I hover over it, it says "No Audio Output Device is installed". I checked device manager and found the issue. Under sound, video and games the Realtek audio driver had disappeared. I tried to reinstall them online and restart my laptop however they still would not show up. I tried to install legacy content through device manager however the realtek drivers then had a yellow exclamation mark next to them and would not work. Please help!

One other thing you can try, look in your downloads on your service page for and Intel IO driver, it's possible that windows native driver is going to be used by your Audio card and for some reason it not being recognized as a precision audio device. That intel IO driver has fixed other devices and may help you.
Otherwise, it appears that your Audio Card has failed and you may want to get in contact with Support.

Most likely window ran an Update that overwrote your Audio driver. Just log on to support enter your model number and service tag number download the lasted Audio drivers for your notebook and install. If that fails then uninstall the current Audio drivers, refresh and select the driver you just downloaded

I tried both of these methods. When I checked dell for audio drivers the only one that appears is the realtek HD audio driver but it doesn't show up in device manager after installing and rebooting. My old driver showed up when I selected the view hidden devices option in device manager. I couldn't get it to activate so I tried uninstalling it and rebooting but my laptop isn't automatically redownloading the driver even though I have automatic driver updated and downloads turned on.

I'm having the same issue, but I've been able to get it working and it stopped again, here is what I know/what my troubleshooting has uncovered.
I started using a new wired headset (more on this later).
At first I assumed a Windows update had botched it up, I did all updates from Dell, nothing. Ran windows troubleshooter, and as almost always, it finds no issues.
I ran the system troubleshooter (not the windows one), the one built into the system that you can access by holding down Fn while pushing the power button, the audio wasn't even tested as the system failed to detect it (like the hardware had failed).
Reset laptop to factory, sound begins working again, forced Windows and Dell updates to NOT update (everything with 2017 dates), everything is fine, audio works for ~3 weeks, use new wired headset a few times, boot up today, no audio once again.
Run system troubleshooter once again, and no audio device recognized again at the system level.
I doubt the fact that I was using the new wired headset prior to the audio completely failing both times is a coincidence.
What can I do to further test/reset the hardware?

For most people that have experienced this problem it seems to be due to a poor update released by Microsoft that overwrote the audio driver. I also did not have any hardware issues and as you mentioned, the troubleshooters never diagnosed and issues. I've had this issue two times on my laptop, though I didn't factory reset it, and both times I couldn't do anything about it until Microsoft released a patch that fixed the issue.
Have you checked device manager for your audio driver? In my case the audio driver was simply missing during the time of this issue, and installing new drivers from Dell or anywhere else was not doing anything as after rebooting to finish the installation, the driver was simply missing again. If its not a driver issue for you, maybe you should check Waves MaxxAudio to see if perhaps your new headset is stuck on a wrong output.
