Inspiron 15 7577 flickering/artifacts, discrete gpu error 43
Hello,
A few days ago I noticed that the screen of my Inspiron 15 7577 would occasionally flicker and display colored artifacts, sometimes going black for a second. This has gotten more frequent over time, and occurs across the entire screen, even when no applications are running. I have not seen this happen outside of the operating system. I thought that this might be a driver problem, so I went to the device manager to update the drivers of the display adapters (The integrated Intel HD 630 is set as the main adapter). This is when I noticed that the discrete graphics card (nVidia gtx1060 max-q) said "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)" in the device manager. My HDMI port has also stopped working, which I believe is because it's connected to the discrete graphics card (correct me if I'm wrong please). Since then, I've tried a variety of suggestions from people with similar problems to no avail.
What I've tried so far:
- updating the nvidia drivers
- uninstalling and then reinstalling the drivers in safe mode
- using ddu to uninstall the drivers, then reinstall
- I've tried the above with both the dell-recommended (23.21.13.9125 ,A04 ) and the latest nvidia game-ready driver. The generic windows display driver gives error 31 in device manager.
- going back to a restore point, this failed to complete repeatedly with error 80070003
- rolling back to the last windows update, this also failed to complete
- unplugging my battery after disabling the nvidia display adapter.
- Running dell supportAssist, this only ran tests on the integrated graphics, not the discrete one. It passed
- Running the pre-boot system assessment, again this did not run any tests on the discrete graphics, only the integrated one. This only reported warning was that my battery is getting old.
- Checking the BIOS to see if it could see the discrete graphics card under system information, it could.
- I think I tried a couple other things, but can't remember what they were right now.
My next step will be to do a clean install on windows, and if that doesn't work I'm thinking of making a warranty claim as I suspect this might be a hardware issue. I have a one-year warranty with about 30 days left on it, this system is less than a year old. Has anyone else had a similar issue, or have any other suggestions?
