Inspiron G7, RAM upgrade

So I wanted to upgrade memory on my G7 to 16 GB, only problem is after opening the back cover, I see 2 slots occupied by 2 4 GB chips, so adding 1 8GB would result in 12 GB? Looking at pics I was under the assumption that my G7 had 2 additional empty slots on located above the 2 occupied ones so I could plug 8 gigs into one of them and end up with 16 GB but looks like this isn't possible and I will have to throw away both 4 GB chips and replace them with 8 GB ones?

Yes, mixing a 8gb and 4gb works ok as long as the both sticks of memory are 2666 DDR4 and not XMP compatible.

Others have already done this and using 12gb without issues, however you will not operate at Dual Channel unless they are identical chips.

I am assuming you have the G7 7588? So you would have to remove one of the 4 GB RAM modules, and install an 8 GB module, which would give you 12 GB. Or purchase 2x8 GB for a total of 16. Specs for that model, regarding RAM are...

Slots
Two SODIMM slots
Type
Dual-channel DDR4
Speed
2666 MHz
Configurations
supported
Per memory module slot
4 GB, 8 GB, and 16 GB
Total memory
4 GB, 8 GB, 12 GB, 16 GB, and 32 GB

So my question now is, would mixing RAM sticks be an issue as long as Ram speed is 2666 and the capacity is the only difference?

I have decided to purchase 1 16 GB chip and replace one of the 4 GBs with that, so 1 slot would have 4 GB and one would have 16 for a total of 20 GB. That should be fine right?

i am also planning to buy 16 gb crucial 2666 and replace one 4gb ram for my Dell G7. Did it work fine in your case. If you could let  me which exact RAM you bought, that would be great.

I have removed the 2 4GB RAM sticks that came with my laptop and replaced them with 2 ballistix 8 GB sticks at 2666 and they have the benefit of lower CAS latency at 16. They work great!

Depends, check the RAM speed and RAM timings, they should be identical. You'll need 2666mhz RAM and the lower CAS latency the better (other timings are not as important as CAS latency).

See my reply to @sid1990 I used ballistix as I was able to get a great deal on a 8GB pair (total 16 GB) with 2666mhz and CAS latency of 16 for 129 Canadian dollars.

What is the maximum RAM capacity supported by the Dell G7 17? Can I put there 2x16GB?
