Inspiron N5010, Windows VGA Standard Display driver

Question

Hello everyone,

I have a Inspiron N5010 laptop, with windows 8.1 on it. I successfully installed most of the drivers from Dell support site, except drivers for integrated graphic card Ati Mobility Radeon 5000. I also tried with Microsoft windows update for graphic card. Both times installing results in BSOD. I assume that something is wrong with integrated graphic card. My computer is therefore running with Microsoft VGA standard display driver, which does not give me possibility to connect the laptop to external monitor and runs on eye disturbing low resolution (1024x768). Is there any way to bypass the presumably damaged integrated Ati graphic card and upgrade my graphic driver to the version which would allow me usage of native resolution and external monitor? I use laptop for ordinary daily tasks and don't necessarily need ati graphic card for my work.

No, it is not possible. If the GPU is faulty, the only solution is to replace the system board.

These were also available with Intel graphics, but to change to that board, you'll also need a new heatsink assembly.

So there is no Microsoft Standard VGA driver version which would allow higher resolution display?,

or any kind of universal (intel?), or nonstandard driver for windows which would enable using external monitor?

No.  You need to load the correct AMD/ATI driver.

Just the last try, before I drop my hope:

Even installed Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for N5010 ( which I can not install - "computer does not meet the minimal requirements" ) would not help anything?

"computer does not meet the minimal requirements" - probably means : your ati card drivers are not installed?

That error can mean many things, but your system is not a hybrid the way most newer systems are. The presence of the ATI GPU means the on-chip Intel GPU, if it's present (it's not if you have a quad core CPU) is permanently deactivated.

The only way to use the Intel GPU is if it's an i7 dual core or lower and to move it to a mainboard that doesn't have the ATI GPU option.

This is why the N5010 is not approved for upgrading to Windows 10. There are no drivers for it. Windows 7 is the last approved windows version.

Thanks for nailing the problem. It seems unsolvable in case of damaged Ati card. In course of my 2 week attempts to install driver, I actually managed to installed it twice ( via Microsoft update suggested Ati driver ), however the computer crashed after couple of hours. Maybe I will try some woodoo techniques - heating the motherboard..., to 'awake' hardware . Thanks, Borut

I run 8.1 windows version and I managed to install all the other drivers for inspiron N5010 ( some of them with troubleshooting compatibility option). I had a feeling that win 8.1 could except drivers suggested from dell site. For a moment I thought, that maybe I don't have old enough drivers ( around 2010 versions ). I also did not know weather it is better to install all the available updates for windows or try to install ati driver prior to updating windows. Thanks, Borut
