The AC Power adapter wattage

Hello,

My Laptop is a Inspiron 3793 17 3000

Its showing the adapter is connected but it isn't charging. I've tried another genuine Dell adapter, and it shows the same problem. The power light on the side of the laptop comes on when you plug it in then goes off after  two seconds. I did a diagnostic check and it came back with this report (see photo)

Thank you.

I did read your post, but it did not address everything that I suggested. I explained the main possibilities and how to narrow down the issue.

Yes, I saw the SupportAssist message, but you should also do as I suggested to see what BIOS says:
Hold F2 while booting, to enter BIOS. See if the charger is recognized.

If you know both genuine Dell adapters are good, and they are both recognized on another Dell laptop, then probably you have a  bad charging jack or charging circuit. I would replace the jack.

Yes, you can continue to use the laptop even if the battery doesn't charge. Use it only on AC power, to avoid depleting the battery.

Replacement jack is here.

Follow the disassembly and reassembly steps in Dell's Service Manual.
Look on YouTube for videos showing disassembly of your model. But, be cautious with them, as some use steps or methods that are not appropriate. Use the videos to add to your understanding of what to do, but follow the steps in Dell's manual.

Whenever touching components or working inside a computer, wear a grounded wrist strap, also called anti-static wrist strap, ESD wrist strap, or ground bracelet. It's a cheap and sensible precaution. Rest the laptop on an anti-static mat or at least a reasonable alternative such as corrugated cardboard.

Updated.

In my case it was the small AC jact which was at fault. I've now replace this and the laptop in up and running again, the part only cost £6.

While I was waiting for the part I did a lot of research and found this a common problem and most where a easy fix and the extreme was the PD1 burnt out on the back of the main PCB.  IMG_2919.JPGScreenshot 2023-01-19 162315.png

There are three main possibilities for what is wrong: charger/adapter; charging jack/port; charging circuit on motherboard. It's a process of elimination to figure out where the problem lies, or at least where it doesn't lie. For example, if your charger is recognized and works on another Dell laptop, then the problem is likely your charging jack or charging circuit.

Hold F2 while booting, to enter BIOS. See if the charger is recognized.

Try another genuine Dell charger of at least the same wattage/amperage. If that second Dell charger works, then the fault is likely with your charger.

If it doesn't work, then the fault is likely with the jack or the circuit. The jack is a relatively inexpensive item that is not difficult to replace for someone experienced in working on laptops.

If a good charger and a new jack won't work, then the fault is likely with the charging circuit on the motherboard, which would normally require replacement of the motherboard.

Thank you Filbert,

The BIOS says that the Adapter not installed. and if i hold the cursor over the battery icon it says 37% (plugged in) If it is the a bad charging jack on the laptop would you know the part number.

Is it ok to run the laptop even if the battery not charging

Thanks again .

Many Thanks.
