The Inspiron 5593 Keyboard issue Strikes Again.

I have been reading all the posts and replies regarding this keyboard issue where the N, B, space-bar, 2, etc.--  keys in the lower 1/3 of the keyboard do not respond.  From the posts on this forum, it is still not clear to me that it is a hardware or software problem-- or some mixture of both.  It also does not appear to have any resolution by Dell.  Pretty sad state of existence right now-- as Dell so far has dropped the ball.

Question:  has anyone FIXED this problem permanently--- not temporarily got it to function-- but a true fix?

What did you do?

I cannot understand why you would think this is a software problem.

Why?  Because of the number of people who have replaced the keyboard and still had the issue, as well as the number of people who have found oh-so-temporary relief by deleting HID keyboards from their system.

Read all of the posts related to this common issue and you'll see what I mean.  More importantly as you read-- be sure to look at the LACK of technical support from Dell in providing any direct guidance for those encountering this problem.  They don't know how to fix it, and they just want the problem (and apparently the customers) to just go away.

Thank you for your reply. I tried cleaning it with one of those air cans, but problem persists. Will try a few other things and if not, will have to end for repair after the pandemic.

Yes--  you are not alone.

  • A can of air won't help.
  • Replacing the keyboard is not proven to help.
  • Certain software changes (deleting installed HID keyboards) does not seem to help as each restart will reinstall the conflicting keyboard.  Deleting them made no difference on the 5593 I purchased.
  • Dell has not provided ANY direct guidance on a repair or fix required for this issue.
  • Dell KNOWS it is an issue for these machines, and actively works to screw over anyone with one of these computers who did not start a trouble-ticket strictly within the warranty period.

You could try to see if its just a corrupted driver. Go into Device Manager and uninstall the driver for the keyboard and reboot and driver will reinstall and see if that fixes it. Otherwise its most likely a bad keyboard and will need replacing.

@AdrianG001

I definitely uninstalled drivers, updated drivers, dumped virtual keyboard drivers per the advice on other threads related to this issue.  The virtual drivers apparently conflict with the physical keyboard drivers, but you can not get rid of them-- they are automatically reinstalled on every restart.

I would love to install a new keyboard and try that to see if new hardware would take care of this.  The problem is that several others have had the same symptoms return after replacing the keyboard.  Waste of time?  Not sure.  Dell won't send me one to find out.

Well--- they will if I PAY for it since my mother-in-law's warranty expired a few days before I called.  @DELL-Cares  really only cares about WHEN I called, and not about the fact that DELL hardware failed During the warranty period showing the same symptoms as so many others, clearly showing a DELL issue.  They don't want to take responsibility for their bad hardware-- or bad hardware-software integration.

What a shame.  I've been buying Dell for 25 years-- more than a dozen computers personally, and more for extended family (like this one), as well as pushing for HUNDREDS of purchases for schools I have worked at.  I never thought I'd see them treat me like this.

@AdrianG001, it's not the drivers. @sdkidx is right, this is a defective product that @DELL-Cares does NOT want to admit it's defective.

Looks like @DELL-Cares is monitoring the replies and will ask for your service tag on a private message and will tell you again that your warranty expired.

I asked if they will admit that there's an issue with this laptop and they have not done that. They want you to pay for the extra warranty/service before they will do anything.

@sdkidx, the heat makes sense. I also get an error about the fan during boot up from time to time but the fan is still working. I get that loud beep when it does the diagnostics during boot up.

@sdkidx, have you tried running another OS on this laptop and see if there's still an issue with the keyboard?

In my case, keys work sometimes. I tried almost all options, but nothing seem to work in time. Clearly its a keyboard hardware issue, maybe related by the temp, maybe not. Curiously, faulty keys are always the same.

I work among other things as a consultant tech. I have recommended and configured hundreds of PC/laptops and other equipment... and I have never seen anything like it. It is not the first time that I see design failures or problems that are generalized, but in those cases the company usually takes over, obviously even without being under warranty, as I repeat a clear problem of them.

In this case, Dell is simply silent, we are not talking about one or two isolated cases, but about a plague. As for me, and I do not say it at all as a "measure of pressure" but as a matter of being consistent, not to recommend a Dell computer again, and less for my own use.

At this point I highly doubt that Dell will do something about it, so I give the fight for lost, I will try to repair it myself or even looking for a replacement keyboard (which is a matter of time before it fails again), and I will use a keyboard anyway external until I replace the laptop.

Never again.

I have been having this issue recently as well. But instead of having a few keys unable to function, its almost as if 2/3 of my keyboard had a stroke and more than 2/3 of my keys have gone limp. The issue I fear is hardware based, but despite running it for almost 1.5 years extensively, I don't understand why now.

Thankfully, an external keyboard remains unaffected from this.

I'm facing this issue ever since I updated the BIOS at the end of this month (Aug 2021), but it could be a coincidence. Anyways, I hope that it gets resolved via software. Otherwise, if the keyboard needs to be replaced than I will have lost a lot of faith in Dell laptops and their quality of their machines.

I bough it, considering as a machine to rely on for 5-7 years, my old Inspiron 5559 (2016) is still running high and this machine here may not last for its warranty period (2 years).

Have just spent the best part of two hours with the technical department. Basically costing me another £178.64 for a replacement keyboard (two months out of warranty). This, apparently, only comes with 90 day warranty. Do they have so little faith in their own product that they won't offer at least a year? I asked if they were aware of any issues, to which they replied no. I directed them to their own website to read these complaints, which they have now done and will raise to the manager too. They will respond to me by next Thursday and I will, in turn, update you here.

Thank you

Definitely not buying Dell again.  This is off topic: My 2 year old desktop bought at same time as laptop needs the motherboard replaced (or so they think).  It's decided it just likes to shutdown when it feels like it.  3 times in the last 24 hours.  New laptop keyboard 1/2 fixed the problem and now motherboard on desktop................... Forget it.  Going back to HP.
