I have bought this SSD from Inspiron. My friend move this SSD from laptop to external USB drive and got read only state. I am trying to recover it. Dell is my only prospect because Kioxia does not support these SSD series

From an administrative command prompt, open diskpart and type

attributes disk clear read-only

then ENTER.

What model system is this?

Are you certain you've issued that command on the correct physical disk?

Run either the Dell diagnostics (extended test, not just the quick 10 min test) or if available, the Kioxia (new name for Toshiba's SSD division) utilities on the drive.  If this problem occurred suddenly and without warning or any other precipitating change you made, it could well be the drive has failed.  On some drives, the appearance of "read only" means a cascade of cells has gone bad that the drive's logic circuitry cannot re-allocate.

F12 at powerup to get to the Dell diagnostics.

You need to do this after booting from something other than the locked drive -- you can't run it on the drive you've booted from.

It is my secondary SSD. I cannot boot from it because it is read-only. I use my primary SSD to boot.

This problem persists on multiple PC. Kioxia SSD utility does not support these series of SSD. Kioxia support team redirected me to this Dell forum. Drive is not fail because I can send nvme format command to SSD from Linux. Command was made successfully and SSD is in unitialized state now. But it is read-only.

Return the drive to the system it came from and run an extended Dell diagnostic on the drive -- what does that reveal?

If multiple systems are showing the same result in trying to read the drive, my suspicion is that the drive has failed (exhausted its spare cells).

i have the same error, and im on windows, on a acer laptop with a totally different ssd. my windows wouldnt start properly and i had to to install it on my HD. after that, my ssd got in the read only state and i cant format it. this is so silly.

Hi @kalidurga As I got from the support team it is internal state of the NVME SSD that can be reset by internal firmware commands but Dell did not help me and removed my message from the forum because it is confidential information and I have no warranty for this device.
