Touchpad buttons not working - Inspiron 5391
Hello,
My wife's 5391 has developed an issue around 2 weeks ago. Out of the blue the two "mouse buttons" on the touchpad have stopped functioning, and at the same time the touchpad will intermittently select items or highlight sections of the screen when the cursor is moved.
I have checked with several virus / malware systems, and nothing has been found.
I have also updated windows 10, along with all available dell updates, including Bios updates, and no resolution.
I have noticed that others on this forum have had a "similar" experience with the touchpad on the 5391, however I am unable to view the suggested fixes they have had, thus am asking for assistance here.
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you
Jim

A post in the forums cured the problem with the BIOS update from January 2022, though there is a much newer update on this support page. But since you have installed the newest BIOS update it is possible the touchpad needs to be replaced. Try using a USB mouse and if it works properly then the touchpad is probably due for replacement. This page at Parts-People describes the procedure and that assy. may also available there. Also run diagnostics, F12 at boot, to verify the system integrity.
If they do not have the touchpad then try this web site. Also eBay here has that part.

Remove the base cover and check the condition of the battery, which is just below the touchpad. It's common to see touchpad issues be the first sign of a battery that's swelling at the end of its life.
If the battery is at all swollen (check both sides), remove and dispose of it outside your home/office immediately. The system will run on AC power until you can order a replacement.

To fix this issue, press the Windows button and type in 'Device Manager. Click on it and then select 'Mice and other pointing devices'. Right-click on the touchpad setting and choose Update Driver. Select 'Search automatically for drivers' and Windows will guide you through the rest of the setup.
